It also goes on to say:

Quote:
contamination of peanuts and peanut butter is monitored in many countries to ensure safe levels of this carcinogen. In 1990, a study showed that average American peanut butter contained an average of 5.7 parts per billion of aflatoxins, per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines of 20 parts per billion
It sounds like unless there is a recall due to this, I wouldn't really worry about it.

Every plant growing is susceptible to some sort of mold or disease.
If everyone worried about it we'd all starve to death.

As a lifelong resident of the agricultural areas of the Midwest, would you like me to list all of the naturally occurring molds that grow on corn plants, wheat plants, soybean plants, and virtually everything that you ingest?

Fearmongering. Sigh.

What a crock!

Life is moldy; act accordingly. Relax and enjoy the peanut butter.

Thanks everyone for your replies - you confirmed what I suspected (and the reason I still add a good amount of peanut butter to my daily protein shakes).

I don't eat peanut butter because it's not NATURAL, but processed. Never heard about mold being associated with it though.

Make your own peanut butter or cashew butter if your worried about it being "processed"
It's quite easy and you can make awesome nut sauces to go over chicken and such by adding some chili paste and coconut milk.

I make an awesome cashew coated chicken with cashew butter sauce and everything comes from the natural foods store.

It's a wonderful source and tastes great (I use Jiff's Reduced Fat and the sweetness is just right for me). And I don't know what its shelf life is (unopened) but it's also considered an excellent "surival food".
