Not sure exactly what we're doing for Thanksgiving - usually, my sister and I trade off who hosts the family, but we might be visiting my brother in San Antonio this year. Still, we picked up a turkey yesterday. For $.59/lb, who could resist?
Normally, I make my cranberry sauce and pies the day before, and everything else the day of. I am not permitted to have Thanksgiving dinner anywhere without making pies.
I love to cook, but his family does not offer to bring anything. I mean, the offer would be nice, right? They do not help clean up, or put things away. How rude!
They won`t even let me know who is coming out to eat until the last minite. I guess I just wanted to vent about this more than anything, but it will be paper plates again this year.
Everyone gets involved in the clean-up process at our TG suppers, menfolk included. Now that my one hoity-toity aunt* has passed on, that is. She considered herself above cleaning up.
Everyone brings something and everyone helps prepare the side dishes. The bird is made by the host/hostess. Everyone helps clear the table and wash dishes. Exceptions are made on the cooking and cleaning if your team is playing in the televised Thanksgiving games and they're on offense.
I don't have a speck of football fan in me, so I've historically gravitated towards the kitchen. There certainly were some useful things to learn in there from some mighty good cooks, now long since deceased.

In our house we turn turn the game off while we say grace. Otherwise the TV is turned on long before the bird is stuffed. When we invite someone new we tell them, "We're going to be watching the games" and clue them in that we cheer with stuffing in our mouths. We're very honest since we realize side bets at the table about passing yardage isn't everyone's idea of an old fashioned Thanksgiving.
Love pie, but seeing as how my lemon trees are always heavy with ripe fruit in late November, I always make something lemony. Last year it was a scratch lemon sheet cake with homemade lemon curd topping. This year it'll probably be lemon bars.
