Years ago we had a cook book with instructions on how to pit cook BBQ. You literally dug a pit and built a huge fire that burned down to coals until you had a fire bed so thick. Then you covered it with soil and then a sheet of tin. The meats were place on the the tin and covered with another sheet of tin and then more soil to trap the heat. A day or so later it would be uncovered. This is something I've always wanted to do and if I can find the old cookbook I may just yet. I suspect that Pit Cooked Hams got their name from this technique. The smokey taste probable is near what the original pit cooked hams were. This is just a guess. I have not researched it but do remember buying one and reading some on the label some years back. If I find one It may be for thanksgiving this year.
Like a New Zealand Hangi - it's done in other parts of the world too, wrapping in banana leaves, burying in hot pits etc. Must try it one day - let's have a party!!!
Bean Hole Beans are cooked in a pot on hot rocks under ground...they continue to be a New England standard....often a fund raising church supper.
Also a traditional New England Clam Bake is done on hot rocks in a pit on the beach, covered with layers of kelp and sea weed, and finally a tarp to keep the heat in.
My father used to do both.....I havent kept up the tradition.
So, I woke up to my freezer growling at me... what does that mean? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....how annoying..... I need to buy a new appliance like a need another hole in my head...
Not even done feeding the girls breakfast yet... will investigate the frig and noisy irritating freezer and inform you all later.... Have a great morning....
Ah SKBS....sounds like what happened to me--one appliance after another. Like they were on some kind of self-destruct at a certain time! That was years ago when we lived in CA and it seemed like we spent a good month replacing nearly every appliance we had--or repairing them! UGH!! Now I have all new appliances and have still had to get repairs--what a drag after spending so much money! We decided to get the extended warranty!!
Elston, wish I could help with the sewing...I can mend and that is about my limit. I agree on the local schools having classes. I know Amber started getting interested in sewing so I bought her a sewing machine for her BD one year but she has since had her baby and I don't think she's had much time to really get into it. For some reason I feel like you would be good at it---like cooking it takes patience and concentration--both of which you seem to have!
No ideas for dinner yet........
So lacey, today you should hear more about your showing for your house---let us know how it went! My fingers are crossed. Sure would be nice to have you living here!
Good Morning....................keeping things crossed here for you Lacey.
Oh Elston those clambakes are the best in the pit.
Today is a good day for soup. We actually broke down and put the heat on late yesterday. The cold came fast but it is supposed to rebound mid week.
Have a great day cooking all those great creations.

No heat on yet, but did turn on the gas fireplace to take the chill off a few times. It has been in the low 30's several mornings.
