I prefer lunch buffets for this reason. I ate nepali food for the first time because I happen to find a place with a buffet. Well prepared and a great way to sample nepali at a lower price than traditional sit down format.

well prepared traditonal items beat out mediocre creative items however.. for example not all home made from scratch cookies are better than store bought just because they are home made..
people who use crisco instead of butter then go on to bake then too long so they are dry and hard...

In general, Choice I. But I could be in a "tried and true mood" so then I'd choose "choice two".

Impeccably prepared is the must.

It depends on why we are eating out? Is it a special occasion , is it while on vacation, or just traveling for a day or so? Maybe it is a spear of the moment decision to have a meal away from home? I have to admit we eat our very rarely except for lunch while shopping or breakfast a couple time a year. if we are on vacation we are inclined to try something new and exciting. If we are dining out for a celebration we would opt for choice number 2. If just traveling or stopping for lunch, just give us something simple, 1/2 way healthy and not over priced.

Choice 1 to me means they took a tiny bit of food, put it on large plate, tried to make it look pretty, and then charged me an exorbitant sum.

Gimme Choice 2 any day

Choice 2, I typically love steak or prime rib at a high end restaurant.

The more I've thought about the options the OP gave, the more unclear I think it is. One person's traditional is the not the same as someone else's.

For example - would this dish fall under "innovative" or "traditional"?

Quote:
Duo of Pork - Pork Tenderloin, Whiskey Glazed Pork Belly, Compressed Peaches, Smoked Maitake Mushroom, Green Beans, Bacon Fat Hush Puppies, Peach Puree
Or how about...

Quote:
Chorizo verde w/string bean& pork loin salad, sherry vinaigrette
Or...

Quote:
fried chicken skin w/beer mustard, toasted garlic, togarashi chilis
I know all of these are impeccably prepared (and range in price from about $5 to $30), but are they innovative or traditional?

I would have to agree with you. The question is pretty subjective to say the least, but it is an interesting choice and fun to see how others respond. Obviously for some of us, me included the price has a lot to do with it.

I really enjoy barbecue, especially the rustic, family owned hole-in-the walls.
