Choice one as I appreciate a good chef's creativity, although if I find a very good French restaurant while traveling, I'll go with option 2 (French is all but dead here in Pittsburgh).
I'm a pretty good cook (wrote a recipe column for 4 years).
We go out to eat 5 to 7 times a week.
When we go out, I want something that I don't make at home, either due to not being able to find the ingredients in my small town (frog legs, quail eggs, dry-pack scallops); something that my husband doesn't like to eat (eggs benedict for dinner, a heavy pasta); and/or something that's just too messy to cook and/or clean up afterward (chicken-fried steak).
Both have their place, but I lean more toward choice one. To me, the biggest perk of eating out is trying things I don't necessarily make myself.
I know what you mean and agree. I guess it depends on what is meant by traditional. Coq au vin is traditional, but a restaurant that makes it well is probably going to be a favorite of mine. But a steak house churning out over priced meat and potatoes? No thanks.
Depends. Either way, I vote for impeccably prepared, even if I'm at the local tavern.
