I grew up on butter. Margarine is like yellow colored Crisco, blech!
I do have to buy it for hubbie though as he grew up on margarine and prefers it.

Margarine is made from vegetable oil. Nothing plastic about it. It is possible to find them with no trans fat, so margarine overall tends to be healthier than butter.

Olive oil is not exactly a healthy oil to consume on a regular basis, as it's composed of omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids.

I used margarine last week, in a new rice recipe that I was trying out.

I never use margarine.

Real butter, olive oil, or coconut oil are what I use.

I bought it a couple of times, but prefer Smart Balance.

I haven't used it in years, but this is because I've since come to prefer the taste of real butter. Seriously, margarine leaves a foul taste in my mouth that I prefer not to experience ever again.

My parents, like many others, were told that margarine was healthier than butter. (And of course, it was cheaper). We used Imperial, sticks for baking and tubs for spreading. On holidays, we had butter, and we all looked forward to it.

Today, I only use butter. Haven't bought margarine one time since I got married 18 years ago.

And butter was $1.99 at my local store in CO.
(Turkeys 32cents a pound!)

Story, my parents worked, only 2 kids, we had plenty of $$...the kids up the road
had one factory working parent and 4 kids...when they saw 'real butter' at our house...they exclaimed
wide-eyed..."You have real BUTTER!"

Their sweet mom babysat me for an hour a couple years after school ...that's
where I saw newspaper on the kitchen floor and she chopped the head off
a chicken for dinner...
I hid behind a kid and peeked, at 5-6 yrs old.

One chicken for 6 people. ....Central NY, farm country.

I did think margarine was mostly trans fats and artificial stuff...glad there was a link to
clarify. (Get it, clarify,haha)

I have never in my life, anywhere heard olive oil was anything but healthful.
I do get Extra light for many uses, so no flavor...plus EVOO when I want that flavor.
I don't care if we talk about oils here, too.

(I am presently doing a ketogenic diet..so saturated fats like butter and bacon are A-ok.
Think Atkins, but less protein, that's all..)
It's a whole different paradigm about the body and metabolism....I have a thread
in the Diet and Wellness.
If you feel strongly and need to discuss saturated fats there
being healthy or not. Open topic.

Thanks everybody.

My dear grandmother (who passed away at 99 years old) NEVER had margarine in her house. She ate eggs every day and butter with her toast and in her baking. She never had heart disease or any other ailments other than arthritis. She broke her hip at 99 and ended up with pneumonia that she died from or I swear she'd still be with us. Yes, I'm sure her good old English genes helped too

So who says butter isn't healthy? She even made her delicious, flakey pie crusts with butter, not shortening (blech) or lard.

We did not grow up using margarine and I also used to cook/bake with unsalted butter. Even with
moderate use and a healthy life style, it can eventually throw you a curve ball. Genetics can be a downer,
hence margarine. Johns Hopkins and Mayo on butter vs margarine.
