Prime Rib is our Christmas tradition too now!!!! (Nothing on the planet better than Prime Rib imo!)Baked Potatoes, Green Beans and Egg Nog too! (And I live in Kentucky not in the Northeast!)
Christmas Eve is also a big dinner day - Turkey, Stuffing, Cranberry relish - and all the other fixings!
For the past 3 years we lived in Florida and went to the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa for Christmas and they usually had a "traditional" plate lunch. This year we are in Hawaii and since there are no casinos, I guess we'll stay home. We have done prime rib many years ago, but I think I'll fix a ham this year. It's just the two of us and the fur kids.
I usually cook for all the Holidays. This year we decided to skip the Hanukkah dinner and just do Christmas. But I was told we had to have latkes so those are on the menu for sure. Latkes and ham just seems WRONG to me. We both love turkey but all I can find is tiny ones for high prices. I need to get on with figuring out what else we will have.
We do all 3 holidays - even though it's only the 2 of us. Thanksgiving - Hanukkah and Christmas. They were all nicely spaced this year . For Christmas this year we're doing a standing rib roast ("prime rib"). I cook it at 300 degrees in a convection oven (our regular oven has a convection feature). And serve with "jus" and a horseradish sauce. Sides are Yorkshire pudding and this easy recipe:
I don't think regular latkes would go with ham at all. I don't like ham (too salty for my taste) but think it pairs more with things like sweet potatoes. How about sweet potato latkes?
I do think regular latkes would go pretty well with prime rib. Which seems to be on sale everywhere this week (the Thanksgiving turkey sales are over - at least where I live). Robyn
Typically, my husband heats up a ham, makes some mashed potatoes and corn and I make some homemade bread or yeast rolls to put alongside it - it's his favorite meal, but I'm not a huge fan of ham, so we only have it once every other month. My favorite meal is Thanksgiving turkey, but my husband is not a fan of turkey - I only make it once a year.
BUT
This year, he "helped" with Thanksgiving. Meaning, I asked him to rinse off the turkey as it came out of the brine. I didn't supervise- and he figured, like everything else, that I was just being "picky" when I told him he had to keep it under cold water for 5 minutes, making sure to rinse it thoroughly inside and out. So... he gave it a quick rinse on the outside, and it was inedible.
The next day, grocery shopping, I ran into the store manager, who I have become friendly with over the years. She sold me an 18lb turkey for $6, so we're having turkey for Christmas.
When I returned home I told my husband about it- he said I was being a martyr.
No more martyr here - I plan on adding turkey to the menu once a month at least from here on out!
(And if he wants ham ever again, he'll need to buy it himself!)
Our family get togethers are broken into "sections" due to the size of extended family. Last weekend was my first time to host and we did prime rib, and for my first it turned out great!! I just kept an eye on the meat temp, and crusted it with horseradish, garlic and olive oil.
Nothing for Christmas Eve, Christmas day I'm doing a brunch, and day after Christmas I'll bring some sort of side to that family Christmas.

We started a tradition 6 years ago that we get together on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day breakfast and Christmas dinner with my husband's parents and his brother and his family as we all live in the same neighborhood. We rotate each year who does what.
In past years, we have done appetizers for Christmas Eve dinner. We all bring 2/3 apps and that way it's easy clean up and we are not so full. This year we plan to do Chinese takeout I think.
Christmas breakfast - French toast, egg/sausage casserole, homemade muffins, fruit and mimosas.
Christmas Dinner - This has changed every year. Some years we've done steaks, homemade lasagna, honey baked Ham, and beef tenderloin. For the last 3 years, we've done some sort of ribs in the crockpot. It's a recipe that my MIL found or saw on a cooking show/website. They are delicious. You can only find the ribs around Christmas time. We usually do some sort of veggie (usually asparagus) salad and bread. This year we are doing mashed potatoes w/ truffles, a veggie, bread and a salad.
Dessert will be courtesy of Publix. An apple pie and some sort of Chocolate cake.
I will have to ask. I can't remember what kind they are...My husband wanted them for his b-day (which is in early Dec)and my MIL couldn't find them. She was told that they only have them around Christmas.
Well, I'll come for a Standing Rib Roast. I am a wonderful guest. I'm Jewish, so I'll be able to appreciate your Hanukkah traditions, and my husband and I spent a year living in Jacksonville Beach, so I will be able to find you easily
nope not cooking Christmas dinner this year not doing anything special for Christmas this year money is tight and we just prefer to let the holiday go by quietly as too much bad stuff has happened this year and we don't want to acknowledge Christmas this year . I'm just tired of Christmas anyone else feel the same ? just tired of holidays , Christmas especially . It seems like everyone is so happy and we just don't feel like being happy .
