Wegmans freshly baked goods and subs are seemingly of much higher quality. Their pricing strategy is similar (full retail other than sales-- and selected loss leaders) to Publix. But their 'take and go', sub and salad/olive bar is far superior to Publix. They also have fabulous customer service.

I am now in the Upper Midwest but would welcome a Wegmans-- but a Publix? Meh.
Wegmans has no sales, just, "consistently low prices" which depends on your definition of low. Wegmans has a plethora of Wegmans brand of everything which in most cases are pretty good, Publix has less but of excellent quality. The fresh produce in Publix is the equal of Wegmans in all that I have been in. Wegmans has a much better bakery section with more selection and much more prepared (pricey) foods.

A funny story about Wegmans. I was in line which, are often interminable, and there was an elderly gentlemen in from of me, at least 90 years old with a 6 pack of beer. They actually asked him for ID and he was confused and had trouble producing it.

Until Wegmans opens some stores in NC (probably 2-3 years), the only area that has both stores is part of central Virginia around Richmond.

Wegmans: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia
Publix: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia

Harris Teeter is more an issue than Publix in NC. Publix expanded into NC in 2011 and currently has 48 stores with 22 more opening soon. By the time Wegmans gets there it will be an uphill battle.

Ah, they had sales when I last lived locally to a Wegmans (but it's been almost 15 years since I moved from NJ)-- and I've only popped in while traveling on business or visiting friends in Northern VA, PA, or NJ since then. But, yes, wholeheartedly agreed that Wegman's bakery and prepared foods are superior (in selection and in quality-- and very possibly in price!)

Wegmans has had no problem going up against HT in Virginia. Largely because they're very different stores. Same will apply for Publix.

I have no idea who Wegmans is, so I only have Publix for experience. I love Publix, they are so head and shoulders above places like Walmart Grocery or Winn Dixie. I work next door to a Winn Dixie, and most days I go over to see if they have something edible in the deli for lunch, and I walk out empty handed....the prepared food looks like it has been there for a year.

Publix has never disappointed me. I pay more, but the service is great (they seem to teach their staff to really cater to a customer), the meat is good, and the stores are clean and well stocked.

When we have sales meetings at work, we always use the way Publix does business as an example of how a company should treat it's customers and how they should conduct business.

I know a number of people who work at the Wegmans a few miles from me and love it. It apparently it a very good company to work for and they promote from within.

I don't think there is an area that has both at this time. Wegmans farthest location at this point is in Charlottesville, VA. I don't think Publix has gone north of NC yet.

There are some Publix (what's the plural form of a word that ends in X? Publixes? Publii?) in Virginia.
