It’s a big leap from even the most expensive supermarket versions of “artisan” bread to good homemade. Safeway used to bake a frozen parbaked version right there that was decent, but I guess those weren’t profitable enough. GONE since a few years ago. The French baguettes they now sell are just more crappy white fluff. They used to sell a slightly different baguette that tasted worlds better but it, too, disappeared.
Dave's Killer Bread is a staple for me. I think it's delicious. I also love Wegman's Marathon bread.

Don't get me wrong, I can also appreciate artisan bakery breads and home made breads, but they're not necessarily better for a sandwich than a good multigrain or rye or sourdough available in any decent grocery store.

It's a good time to be alive when we can be disappointed in all the wonderful choices we have.
LOL. Right??

The bread is still magnificent!

To paraphrase my old dad, “If the French made bread out of horse s**t and bus tickets it’d still taste better than the stuff that they make in England!”
Sometimes he’d alter that to “made out of monkey p**p and brick dust”, but it meant the same.

We have a middle eastern supermarket,it has a bakery which makes French bread, pastry the European way,it has a machine which makes pita bread and several times a day, bakeries bring in Iranian,Syrian bread with white or black seasame seeds.
Bakeries do not bake bread as it is not a high margin product.

You can't miss what you've never had.
back then,Europeans would have a glass of wine, bread with cheese and creamy soup for lunch, meat is reserved for dinner, meat is expensive!
so bread is an important item on the lunch menu

For poor people, bread was a meal.

I do miss the French Vietnamese bakery in Hawaii. A bahn mi will never be the same without that bread. It was truly a work of art.

There is very good bread here in the U.S. I live in a mid size city of about 200,000. We have a few really good bakeries that make bread. We also have some great, looking at you Jessica's, When Pigs Fly, etc. bakeries that sell to grocery stores.

There is no need to downgrade our foods. We are not Europe but we are not bad. We do/make/bake/create different from them and that's ok.
