In short, it isn't that Fort Lauderdale is boring...it isn't. It's that if someone has come from NYC, then it is hard for anywhere in the U.S. to compete with NYC on the same level.

From NYC, the only logical way to go is international, if someone wants more of NYC but different scenery.
Well I think Chicago could hold its own when it comes to comparing to NYC and D.C. too from what I have been told.

Well those areas can't stand up to NYC, no. BUT if you move to Miami you will be in the thick of it. So you can easily get to events that are going on in the city. Miami is no NYC, not by a long shot but it is a heck of a lot better than Fort Lauderdale when it comes to activities.

Fort Lauderdale is great. Las Olas Blvd near downtown has a ton of art galleries and upscale restaurants, while the area neat the beach has a lot of bars. All things considered, I like Fort Lauderdale much better than Miami.

You choose Miami or FTL because of the beach life. If you are a young fellow with no children, then night life along the beach in both cities can be fun. There is some cultural life, but remember that FTL was able to get its symphony bankrupt a few years ago: it says a lot to me...

Neither place is a real city, the way NYC or Boston or Chicago are. There are ethnic festivals, beach events However, if you do not find beach life fulfilling (I do, I love the beach), then you may not be happy there.

As for the difference between the two, remember that the energy level along the coast goes down moving from Miami to Boca. It is not such a huge difference, but it can make the difference if this stuff is important to you.

Fort Lauderdale is boring compared to NYC, Miami, and L.A., but is more exciting than Atlanta, Tampa, Detroit, Batimore, Sacramento, and Boise. LOL. Does everyone agree? It is really unfair to compare Fort Lauderdale to NYC because they are two different worlds. The only thing in common is the number of former NY's living in SOuth FL. Miami has a lot more to do, and is a major U.S. city with all of the amenities. South Beach is the ultimate entertainment spot, plus Aventura, Brickell, and Coconut Grove which are the other hotspots. There are twice the number of people living in Miami as Fort Lauderdale/Broward. That said, Fort Lauderdale is only 30 minutes from Miami so you can easily hop on I-95 and get to South Beach whenever if you live in Fort Lauderdale.

Other factors to consider are that whites (non-Hispanic) are still the majority in Broward County, while Hispanics and other minorities are the heavy majority in Miami-Dade. Not sure if that matters to you. And Fort Lauderdale is more laid-back and spread out. I would strongly recommend that you take a trip down here and visit both Fort Lauderdale and Miami and make a decision for yourself.

I think Miami has a lot of cultural neighborhoods and cuisine. It doesn't have the diversity that Boston, NYC, and Chicago has between Italian, Irish, Chinese, etc. Most of Miami's culture is Cuban, Caribbean, and South American.

In terms of overall things to do, I think Miami beats most places, and is right up there with Boston. South Beach is the ultimate nightlife scene in America, and during the day the beaches are on par with L.A. beaches. Fort Lauderdale is a more laid-back place, but offers bits and pieces of the entertainment you'd find in Miami.

I think Fort Lauderdale, Miami, NYC, Boston, D.C., Chicago, Vegas, L.A., and San Fransisco are all amongst the most exciting cities in the country. Fort Lauderdale and Miami are exciting in different ways though than NYC or Boston. In South FL the beaches add another dimension to the excitement. NYC, Boston, and CHicago on the other hand have more cultural type entertainment than South FL. So its really a trade off. Miami has South Beach. L.A. has Hollywood. Vegas has the casinos. Each place has its own unique identity. I don't think you can say that one place is more exciting than the other except in the case of NYC versus Fort Lauderdale. NYC clearly has more to do than Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale is much more boring than Miami Beach. Las Olas doesn't even come close.
