In the NY area, summers can feel just as hot and humid as Florida. The difference is that in NY, it doesn't really start until about mid-June and it pretty much ends by mid-September. In Florida you can tack on three more months to that and it feels l-o-o-o-o-ng.
The best time of year in the northeast is September through December. October is beautiful. You go apple picking. You go get pumpkins. You drink cider. Then it finishes up with Halloween. November it starts to get crispy and it's time to crank up the fireplace. Make that cider mulled. Then you get to have Thanksgiving. December is cold but it's Christmas. Frightful weather outside but delightful fire inside. Sleigh bells ringing. Silver bells in the city. Friends are calling "you-hoo". Lol. New Year's Eve means having a special dinner, some champagne and watching the ball drop before nestling in your bed for a long winter's nap.

After all that, you can have the rest of the year.

This is a long thread on the obvious. If I could live in two places (and that will be a reality soon enough), it would be in New England from Memorial Day through the end of September and Southwest Florida for the rest of the year. As others have said here, it all goes beyond the weather. I wouldn't trade growing up in New England and raising my kids here for anything. There is great culture, great education, great food, great sports, and everything is relatively close by. There are good reasons why people wait to retire to move to Florida. Others will trade all of those good things for the weather. I'll retire soon enough in Florida and downsize in Massachusetts from Memorial Day through the end of September and feel lucky enough to be able to do that. By lucky, I am looking forward to not having "a plow guy", a snow shovel, a scraper, insulated gloves, etc. It's easy to put that stuff out of mind until November. For those raising families, they figure it out and weigh the factors, including the heat of Florida that lasts much longer than summer.
