not insuring and registering your car in the state it is primarily parked is insurance fraud.

it does not have to be your primary home but the car must be parked in that state mostly.

lots of folks live in ny but have second homes in florida. many maintain a car down there that is registered and insured there. but they do not drive that car daily in new york.

the reason is under federal law a state is required along with the insurer to pay out any additional claims when you have an accident in another state that has a higher minimum insurance requirements then the state you are insured in.

automatically you have to be elevated to the minimum states requirement that you are driving in and you are not charged for that. the state and insurer just eat the difference.

so you registering and insuring in a state you do not live full time can leave that state responsible for paying out more in claims then you are paying for.

it doesn't worrk like that. insurance law says you can only have one address the car is principally garaged in. period! it is fraud and the other insured are paying for your lying. there is a reason your area is more money, could be greater chance of theft , and you should be charged more for the insurer taking that risk.

but since you are not paying for coverage you are getting others have to make up the shortfall if a claim goes in..

It's odd how people often believe lying is justified if it benefits them in some way. The question is not really one of whether one CAN lie and get a lower rate, but, does it 'honestly' make any sense? It's really not that complicated, Lying on an insurance application to get a lower rate is insurance fraud. It is both illegal and, if detected, will also result in having one's insurance claim/s rejected.

they will flag you as an assigned risk for lying if they catch you. that will cost more then what you saved by lying.

Meh, fine with me. I've had 2 claims filed and no trouble. Doesn't matter though because the rates have dropped and I'm going to be switching to the actual town I'm living in in about 5 or 6 days.

And you think I'm concerned about it? Or do you think that me saying I'm gonna switch it anyway was somehow related to me thinking I was going to be found?

Good luck with that :-)

we couldn't possibly know what you were thinking but in any case not to wise admitting to things like insurance fraud on public forums.

we see people admit to tax cheating all the time here and i often wonder if someone looking for that IRS finders fee will turn the post over for investigation.
