The bugs in my compost are full of mites. Apparently they're not necessarily harmful and just want to hitch a ride to new food sources (which are usually fly eggs)?
Lots of flower buds on my rooted cuttings of bluecrown passionflower.
These two butternut squash plants have really taken over their space and about to start to overflow...
They're already starting to set fruit.
I think I'll have a lot more than the usual 2 fruits per plant on these...
Picked over 3lbs of shi****o and pepperoncini peppers.
Plus mulberries, alpine strawberries, peas, green beans, swiss chard, a gypsy pepper, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchinis and what is now becoming a typical daily haul of raspberries.
Both of my bluecrown passion flowers (passiflora caerulea) just had their first flower today. The flowers have a weak but pleasantly fruity scent.
Last year, only 1 out of my 3 plants had flowers, and it only had 3 flowers all season, with the first one on August 2, so we're off to a much better start this year, since it looks like both of this year's plants will have dozens of flowers.
Last year's plants were brand new, started from seeds, and passion flowers often need a couple years before they start to bloom. This year's plants are cuttings taken in the fall from last year's plants, so maybe they inherited the genetically programmed age of the plants they came from and are behaving (flowering) like 2nd year plants, rather than 1st year plants?
If so, that would be another benefit of growing passion flowers from cuttings, rather than from seeds - they might flower sooner that way.
First beefsteak tomato (Pink German) is beginning to ripen. My cherry tomatoes have been untouched, so hopefully that means the big tomatoes won't get bothered by squirrels, chipmunks, etc either.
