Thanks for pointing that out. One thing, though - the captchas

I'm not sure why that kind of security is necessary, especially with so many people accessing the site. It definitely slows you down.

On the other hand, what would it be like with the spambots adding to the activity on the site?

Except this is strictly a one way communication and does not require registering or giving an e-mail which the bots could harvest. I suppose it's a case of "better safe than sorry".

Anyway, since the enumeration districts I'm researching at this point are small, and I have a large, diverse number of surnames, I just download all the records for that district in the zip file format (smart thing for the archives to do ) and look at them from my hard drive. Goes faster

Yeah, I discovered that, too. I've found both parents and all the grandparents that were still alive, so far.

In organizing the images, I briefly scan each one and then rename it to whatever surnames I find on each image. That way I can go back and reference it when I decide to search for 1940 details on that particular family member.

If he was counted it was because some one else filled out the form and turned him in.
Found him! Found Great-grandpa.

He was living with his daughter's (my dad's mom) family. He got turned in, lol. And to make it even better one family member was listed by his nick-name and Great-grandpa by a name NO ONE called him. Uproarious. Spitting in the eye of the government even in 1940.

Is there anywhere when a state will be released listed? I'm looking at California and Alabama.

Go to the site and type in the state. I found Ohio and didn't think it was available yet. The directions are super-easy.

Hopefully some downstream relatives on a surname I'm stuck on. My GGGGF was born about 1775 and I'm through one of his daughters. He had one son. Just really stuck on information about him and have traced decendents through 1930.

I'm used to doing genealogy for the UK so I was shocked to see that the US census for 1940 is out already. With the UK, I'm just getting into the 1911 census, which is the latest.

The UK has a 100 year privacy law. I guess if I didn't already know my American parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents I'd be excited about the 1940 census. But as it is, I'm just glad I'm not quite old enough to be IN it.
