Michigan, lets do 5. Like Ohio, not an educational powerhouse of top-tier schools, but Michigan is one of the best universities in the world, so it does some lifting.
Sounds like you're from Michigan, no? And outside of UofM and MSU, there is really nothing in Michigan. Wayne State isn't bad if you like sitting in a decent area surrounded by a whole lot of nothing. Too bad UofM can't hold onto its graduates and keep them in state. We all know they could use em.

You should try sitting in Bowling Green - now there's a place surrounded by a whole lot of nothing ! After further thought, you could say the same about Columbus, Ohio.

I was tempted to put one of the Claremont Colleges at #10(such as Harvey-Mudd) but the OP asked for academics and reputation - while H-M has both it is not widely known as other schools(like Pepperdine).
