Hmm.. would Maryland include DC? If not, I'd say this off the top of my head:
Johns Hopkins
United States Naval Academy
University of Maryland, College Park
Goucher College
UMBC
Towson University
St Mary's College
College of Notre Dame Maryland
Loyola University Maryland
Coming up with that many was hard! And I am still short one. Maybe I am forgetting one.
If I include DC schools the list would change obviously.
I would say DC gets it's own list, especially given the prestige of the top 4...
1. Georgetown University
2. George Washington University
3. American University
4. Howard University
5. Catholic University
6. Corcoran College
7. Trinity College
8. Gallaudet University
In Iowa...
1-Grinnell College (Grinnell)
2-Luther College (Decorah)
3-Drake University (Des Moines)
4-University of Iowa (Iowa City)
5-Iowa State University (Ames)
6-Buena Vista University (Storm Lake)
7-University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls)
8-Simpson College (Indianola)
9-Coe College (Cedar Rapids)
10-Wartburg College (Waverly)
But I'm Luther all the way.
Really I think state and private schools should be in totally different categories. They are barely comparable.
From what I can tell, UMass has never been in the same league academically as the rest of the list I posted. And as for its reputation, I may be wrong, but outside of New England and New York, I don't think anybody knows or cares much about it. With all the powerhouse private schools in the state, I think UMass will always be an also-ran, in terms of the OPs criteria.
But Northeastern and Boston U might also be on the list I stated. They're defintely good schools, and popular ones too.

I don't think that's true at all. I wouldn't compare a big state school to a tiny private liberal arts college, but it's generally fair to compare universities to universities.
