Too much testosterone I suspect. Its typical college ranking each others major, threads, home town, etc. I agree it is too common and once it gets going it dominates a thread and the OP's question, needing an answer is lost. We need to tone it down and respond to OP's not take things too personal and make the thread about us when its about the OP's question. (threads for the back and forth exist, lets keep the my dogs bigger than your dog stuff to those.)
Great post....if we all liked the same things that one place we all loved would be so crowded it wouldnt be the same. Differences and diversity are good, if any place was perfect, the crowds would ruin it in sort order without diverse interests.

What your first paragraph stated is something that occurs way too much in regards to a particular poster in the forum for my area. It's almost like the poster is trolling or instigating and making things personal just because.
I guess this is something I have to deal with. You are right people are different. Everyone isn't going to like the same thing. I get offended when people say negative things about New Jersey and it upsets me but I know that's their opinion. I hear some southerners say that they don't like the northern mentality and that makes me very angry. I guess I have to get over other peoples opinions.

This is an interesting topic. I have been so intrigued by how many people out here in California don't just hint at but bluntly say they would never leave this place, they would die first. And maybe it's like that on the east coast where I am from but I don't see it because I'm used to everything. I have been trying to get at why it is this way and I am starting to see some of the things they see but it's still interesting because everybody will have their own reasons. At times; however, they can be a little defensive here in L.A., feeling threatened by NYC and even SF which can be obnoxious.
No one likes to be "put-down." But the truth is that everyone isn't going to "fall in love" with us. And everyone isn't going to "be in love" with where we live either!...This is just reality. We all have different "needs" and tastes and preferences...Some people take things very "personally" and get defensive if anyone dares to say anything they perceive to be "negative" about their area. Have you noticed this?...CD is basically a place where we can gain information and "compare notes" about different regions of the USA and world...Why do you think that some people have such a "do or die" mentality about where they live? As far as publicly trumpeting where you live, city people do it more than non-city people, I think, because what's another handful of people moving to a place with a population in the millions or hundreds of thousand but the reason people live in the country, for example, is because there isn't a lot of people there. Why broadcast how great it is if you want to keep it small? I could be wrong but I see the cheerleading being a more urban thing.

I think that the reason why people get so angry if you say anything negative about where they live is because their enviornment is a reflection of them. All things are related, so people would get offended that if you make fun or say bad things about where they live, indirectly people do take it as if you're saying they're something wrong with them because our enviornment influences us and to some people their enviornment and their person are inseparable. Think about if you make fun of someone's country, even if they don't live there anymore. "I think this country _____ is really backwards. They are very corrupt, they are uncivilized, the don't have any discipline to make their country better", and if you're home country even if you immigrated here to the USA was made fun of that you'd be very mad. The same goes with cities even in the US, the same thing applies. They get very defensive because I feel like they feel it is the same type of situation as I mentioned earlier, and thus they can react strongly to even the slightest hint of saying something negative about their city where they live.
Generally, anywhere that has a high percentage of natives still in the area are like this. Midwestern cities (especially) are bad about this. I can tell you for certain...in some midwestern cities, the citizens will be ready to throw tomatoes at you if you express that you "don't like it there". It almost has to be done covertly.
