I didn't even realize Arkansas is spelled "Ar-KANSAS" until a coworker recently pointed it out to me. Needless to say, I was mindblown - and felt a little stupid.
Now that I'm aware of the state within a state in Arkansas's spelling, I legitimately want to know why we don't pronounce it "Ar-Kansas" like it's spelled, and like how "Kansas" is pronounced. Maybe it would have been too similar and people would get confused?

Really, we should be pronouncing Kansas as kan-SAW, as the spelling is from the French phonology.

I don't know, either. I have wondered about that before.
When I lived in the south (TN, but met friends from other southern states) I was always uncomfortable trying to figure out how to say New Orleans.
I grew up in CA saying New OR-lee-unz, then later, New Or-LEENZ.
Never quite sure how I should say it. Seems like it's different wherever you are, but wherever you are, they look at you like you should know how to say it their way lol!

I think people only accept when you say Nawlins if you come from the area.
New Orlins is how i say it, used to pronounce it as New Or-Leenz when i was younger.
