Surprised Ann Arbor, Michigan wasn't mentioned. It has a fantastic downtown, has large employers outside of the university such as Google, Toyota, and the VA, a great public school system and fantastic parks system as well.

Saratoga NY - Skidmore, the springs, horse racing, entertainment, vacation, leisure activities, scenic stuff, boutique farming.
Providence RI.- Brown, RSDI. Coastal travel, government, roller derby.
Iowa City Iowa. U IOWA? A bunch of other businesses and things.
Philadelphia PA? Various schools and fortune 500 companies.
Gainesville Fl. Not sure but someone told me about this one.

Somebody said Davis CA, which is a town very much dominated by the snooty / angsty students and the college they attend.

Every town with over 30,000 has a college, very few of which are dominated by the college.

Huntington, WV.

Marshall U (whose unfortunate reason for fame was shown in the film "We Are Marshall") has 12,000 students in a city of only 45k, and the college is only a few blocks from downtown. Doesn't feel like a college town at all.

Gainesville is the outlier here. While it's a nice place, it is very dominated in every possible way by UF.

I was just in Knoxville last week, it seemed very much dominated by the college in my opinion.

Tallahassee is the most obvious example I can think of from my experience.

At least Tallahassee is more well-rounded than Gainesville.

a "college town" is by definition a town or city dominated by the college-no?
