Virginia's divide isn't really North/South in a traditional sense. It's more like D.C. metro vs rest. And while the fact NoVa is quite 'blue' has been a national news item and affected a few elections significantly, it goes beyond that. It's the fact most people in NoVa are not actually from Virginia and thus view the area simply as the D.C. suburbs and part of the generic Northeastern mega-city.
I think the traditional divide in VA was much more coastal Eastern VA vs the mountainous West due to the different economies and political priorities in those regions.
