Random comments about different states can certainly be amusing. Many people from Florida do indeed flock to western North Carolina in the summer - because it is such a DIFFERENT place in a number of obvious respects. Not too much in the way of rugged mountain landscapes and temperate summers in the Sunshine State.

There are several I think would be genuinely underrated. I'd really have to say South Carolina and Alabama, as the post indicates.

In AL, Birmingham, Huntsville and their coastal region are very livable areas.

In SC, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charlotte's SC suburbs, Columbia, and nearly the entire SC coast has some of the best quality of life anywhere, IMO.

There are others that come to mind, but I'd have to say SC and AL would be tops in terms of being underrated on a national level.

IMO Alabama seems to be the nicest of the slower growing Southern states. Huntsville has potential to become a mini Raleigh with all it's research facilities, Birmingham needless has a bad rap but has some nice urban core and scenic topography, Mobile and Montgomery are two of the cleanest and safest cities in the Deep South.

Georgia in a way. People still think its some backwater, heavily republican place of hicks and hillbillies.

In reality, Savannah and Atlanta lead the way as two very different unique, cultural hubs. Georgia is actually a pretty even split between Republicans and Democrats, and actually is leaning more Blue this year alas. The state has beautiful mountains in the North andsprings too. The largest airline hub, airport in the world by passenger traffic.. its often dubbed the transportation hub of America.

Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky are considered "Southern States"? I always thought Virginia was a Mid Atlantic state.

Anyway I live in Florida and I definitely agree with the person who said it was completely different before Disney World. My family moved down here in 1960 and you wouldn't even recognize Lee County as the nice, relaxed place it used to be.

Since I have only lived in New York, North Carolina and Florida, I don't know much about the other states but it seems to me Alabama is probably the most underrated from things I have read.

Kentucky is extremely Southern. Virginia was historically but feels less so these days.

Kentucky is 100% Southern.

West Virginia and portions of Virginia fit in more with the “Mid-Atlantic” region. I still consider Virginia to be mostly Southern.

As for underrated...KY certainly comes into play. KY has a low population, decent jobs around Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati suburbs. One can also find four even seasons and beautiful and varied topography.
