A question for all southerners (and this is not meant to be snarky, I'm genuinely asking) where do you go in the heat of summer to escape? Us northerners frequently travel to warmer climates for a nice break during the winter. I enjoy a short getaway to FL or HI but I wouldn't want to move permanently.
Do southerners travel for a weather break? Skiing perhaps?
What makes you think Southerners want to escape the heat? Maybe ppl like it. I don’t mind humidity & heat, hence why I’ve lived on the east coast for so long. :::shrug:::
I've never had the luxury of being able to do that, but I'd most certainly go somewhere to the Northeast, perhaps even into Canada. But hey, the Northeast is where I want to move altogether, not just visit. I can't stand any "season" down here in the South. It gets too hot even during the winter down here.
I can not imagine going to an even more miserable place like Florida.
Without leaving the southeast, the only real option is to go as high in elevation as you can. At 4K feet ac isn’t even needed in the summer, there just aren’t many places that high in the southeast.
Right, but the question is why they don't leave the southeast. I live in NC and know plenty of people who have the money to go North in the summer, but they don't.

One thing to keep in mind is that going from the south to many places in the north in the summer doesn’t guarantee a huge change in temperature outside of some specific areas.
I live in Wisconsin where going to Florida in January offers an enormous difference to those seeking relief from the cold.

This is very true. There is virtually no difference in the average July temperature and humidity between Atlanta and Philadelphia, for example. In fact, the major cities of the megalopolis seem to get over 100 at least as much as we do. There is more of a south vs. north difference at the beginning and end of summer than in the middle of the season, when much of the entire country outside the West Coast and highest altitudes is roasting.
Here in NC, those who wish to escape the heat head to the mountains, particularly those areas where elevation is 3,500 feet and higher. Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Cashiers, and Highlands are popular summer areas. A few summers ago I took a day trip to the High Country. The weather forecast here in the Piedmont was for highs in the upper 80s low 90s. I enjoyed a lunch on a restaurant patio in Banner Elk where the temp was 67 degrees and sunny.
Very, very, debatable? Advantage heat as you don’t have to shovel it, slip on it, or drive in horrible conditions associated with inclement weather, but from a comfort standpoint I’d rather have the cold vs high heat, and/or humidity.
I have the technical clothing to ski comfortably in -10F. Hotronics ski boot heaters. Mittens with heated glove liners. Balaclava, helmet, and hood popped over that. At -20F, I need to come inside every couple of hours.
I don’t know how to dress for 90F+ and humid and do anything active. I’m on the boat or at the beach in that weather.

We like the beach, the pool, and the lake. It's not really that bad.
However, we have traveled to NE, the PNW, and Canada on summer vacations.
