I live in NE Texas and it's still hot here in September and by then I am usually sick of the heat (not so bad before then in my opinion, and I HATE cold weather with a passion, more than I hate hot weather, so there's that). Anyway, I generally either go to the Smoky Mountains or even as far as Maine in September for a little break. Otherwise, I don't much care one way or the other about the heat in June, July or August. I mean, it's hot. It's summertime. So be it. But September? I want a little break.
I went to coastal southern Virginia last June and it was terrific in my opinion. I had a blast.
This is exactly how I am... I actually think the summer is pretty fun in general. I'm grilling fajitas and hanging out at the pool almost every weekend. Even though the days are oppressive I love the warm but comfortable nights.
But yeah, by month 5 of summer in September it's a bit annoying. That's a good time for a trip to the West Coast.
Higher elevations. I live in northeast TN. I have plenty of spots above 3000' for a hike or swim. There are places within 45 minutes of me at 5000'-6000'

Yes, Boone has the nicest climate of any area in the Southeast with a population over 10,000 people. Average July high temperature is 77F. Elevation is around 3,300ft.
Seems like half of North and South Carolina goes to Western North Carolina around Asheville and the Smokies every weekend during the Summer months. During the peak season the traffic in and around Asheville snarls to an absolute mess that is up there with the worst Charlotte rush hour traffic jams (or worse). I know as I have lived in both Asheville and Charlotte and still have family and friends in both that I visit frequently. The temperature difference in Asheville is typically a full 10 degrees cooler than Charlotte or Raleigh and less humid so it is a big weekend draw for the urban crescent folks.
Me personally? I head to the Great Lakes states or abroad to a milder climate. Come August I will be headed to Grand Rapids and Mackinac Island to escape the brutal August Summer in Virginia. Oh yeah and of course Asheville in July lol. Last Summer I did Guanajuato, Tequila, and Guadalajara Mexico which is surprisingly mild in August rarely getting over 83 and low humidity. It was actually cooler and less humid than Asheville even which I was in the week before Mexico.

Thankfully will be headed at the end of August into September and will be splitting my time with Mackinac Island as well which should be very pleasant that far north. Around that time it looks like the temperatures are about 5 degrees cooler on average than where I am at in Virginia in Grand Rapids and 11 degrees cooler on Mackinac Island. I will take whatever I can get!
