Stereotypical Canadian aligns most with stereotypical Minnesotan.

The main cities of southern Michigan and upstate New York are actually very, very different from the main cities in southern Ontario. You find more commonalities between rural areas of those states and similar parts of southern Ontario.

Obviously, people living north/south of the border will find geographical similarities. BC and Washington is a good example.

So I would go by which state has the closest mindset to Canadians. Even that gets tricky, but it definitely will have to be a liberal state.

And once again, we have Vermont for the win! Many of the locals I've encountered here so far seem to have a genuine affection for Canada.

Vermont, Minnesota, Maine, Washingston, and Massachussets come to mind.

Rural Minnesota is a lot more conservative, rednecky, 'MURICA than any of those states. It also has zero French influence.
That's not true at all. Minnesota was at one time part of Nouvelle-France and later La Louisiane. There's a lot of French place names all over the state that reflect this (Duluth, Cloquet, Lac Qui Parle, Faribault, La Crescent, St. Cloud, Le Seuer, Grand Marais, Mille Lacs, Voyageurs National Park, Baudette, Frontenac, Grand Portage, etc.).

Saint Paul was founded by French Canadian Pierre Parrant, who named the settlement "l'oeil de cochon" (Pig's Eye) which is where that nickname for the city comes from.

Even the state of Minnesota's official motto is "L'étoile du nord" (The Star of the North).

Interesting perspectives here, the feeling is not so mutual on the other side of the border.
