My gosh, Louisville isn't the answer to everyone's questions. The OP said no humid summers. That definitely leaves out Louisville.
But back to the OP. In addition to the cities already mentioned (except muggy Louisville) check out Salt Lake City. Not only does SLC have amazingly beautiful scenery, it's actually pretty hip and VERY SAFE. It's a city where people absolutely love their outdoor sports and where you can go from downtown to the ski slopes in a half hour.
Utah does have some weird drinking laws, and they're down-right draconian about their anti-smoking ordinances. So if you're a chain smoking alcoholic you should look elsewhere. Otherwise, you might be surprised at how enjoyable SLC can be. It also has (according to Forbes) the country's best job market.
Good suggestion with SLC. LOL about the "chain smoking alcoholic" line.
Now, as for Louisville . . .
quoted from original post: ". . . hot Summers I can deal with, but when it's the Dog days of August in April...."
Louisville doesn't have summer in April, so maybe it should at least have a spot on the list of possibilities.

I never thought about SLC. Something to think about...ohh, and I don't smoke and RARELY do I drink and when I do so, it's only a little wine or like one or two beers...unlike most Jersyians who LOVE to get sloshed every weekend and can't have any fun without alcohol.
Hey, maybe I'll find a wife or two or three over there in Mormon country
Chicago: May have everything you want except mountains close by. Still, you've got those gorgeous Lake Michigan views, and water recreation, and I'm not sure about this one, but it may be that some wooded smaller rolling hills in Wisconsin and southern Illinois might be within day trip range.
S. Illinois is pretty far from Chicago (375 mi. from Chicago to Carbondale, the sort of "capital" of S. Ill), but there are nice places close to Chicago like Chain 'O Lakes State Park with boating, camping and a few little hills. Not much farther to S. Wisconsin, either.
I'd be careful about SLC; the Mormon influence is strong. Go over to the Utah forum and read about it. Some people have a hard time with it and some don't.
If you're from Jersey, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume you are used to living in a big metro. You may not care about this, but to someone from the BosWash corridor, places like Louisville and SLC can seem small. Even St. Louis and Portland, though larger than both of those, may be smaller than what you're used to. It might not make a difference to you, but it's something to consider.
I'd look at Seattle and the Bay Area. In the Midwest, Chicago could work if you don't need the mountains. Minneapolis also seems worth checking out, though it gets very cold.
I don't know much about any of these places, save Chicago, but I'm just throwing some names out there.

Try the Front Range of Colorado. Plenty of transplants from all over the country and world. It has a semi arid, invigorating four season climate. Plenty of top notch culture and recreation in the region too. Denver is no longer a large cow town.
Not sure if the Denver area is a good place to find a gal though I did meet a young lady from Westport, CT while I was visiting the Univ. of Colorado and wound up dating her briefly after we both returned to Connecticut.

Jersey is just one big sprawling suburb of slums, condoes, McMansions, Big Boxes and the occasional....and I mean occasional, downtown area. I wouldn't mind living in an actuall, nicely planned city, even if it was smaller than the super-big ones...I am not sure about Chicago though, Obama's crazy preacher might hit me upside the head with a microphone for being a black man who does not believe in crazy conspiracy theories.

A little crime I can deal with, as I have common sense, but I do not want to deal with the nightly drive-bys...
No good at all! Sounds scary! A couple people mentioned St. Louis and Louisville, but i think both of those do not fit into your criteria. Actually SLC is not too bad of a suggestion, didn't think about it I'm still thinking Portland, Seattle, San Diego, and San Francisco though SF will probably have more areas with higher violent crime than the others. Check out the individual boards of those for peoples opinions, and some excellent photo threads to get an idea what the areas look like.

Getting sloshed with your three Mormon wives? Now that is an idea!

Oh, I know all about Jersey, having grown up on Staten Island, I know its not the most exciting place the world...its just that a lot of cities seem small by comparison to me, having been conditioned to think of "the city" as "New York." Chicago doesn't, though. Come to think of it, why not check out one of the gentrified/gentrifying parts of Brooklyn or Queens?
Hah....you don't have to worry about Obama's preacher . There's plenty of black men in Chicago and most of them are not conspiracy theorists, trust me. That said, you may well prefer to live somewhere closer to mountains and stuff.
I'm a 27 year old who has lived his entire life in the armpit of America (New Jersey) and want to move next summer.
Don't forget...armpits always come in twos. So don't move to Louisiana...
