I wouldnt say Houston is a small LA, rather Houston is basically huge Long Beach. Very diverse, excellent food, laid back, that blue collar international feel, a mix of urban and suburban, and public transit leaves a lot to be desired.

LA is just too image conscious, tied to entertainment, and dense. Its not to say Houston and LA dont have things in common because they do, but Houston reminds me a lot more of a big Long Beach than a small LA.

Why are people saying Houston? Houston is nothing like LA, it's a southern city culturally and the people's lifestyle/attitudes are completely different. Las Vegas is the only city that comes close to being similar to LA due to proximity and culture being heavily influenced by LA. Honolulu is a close second. Outside of the US, cities like Sydney and Santiago are very similar to LA

I consider Phoenix to be much more similar to L.A. than Vegas & Honolulu.

I feel Phoenix is not vibrant enough and too bicultural (basically just Midwestern White and Mexican)

Phoenix has a much more robust economy than Vegas, and is more multicultural than you give it credit for. It's also bursting at the seams with transplants from SoCal.

Its the sprawl and multiculturalism as to why the two are being compared.

I’ve always felt like Tampa was the LA of Florida given the extensive sprawl, the small downtown, and multiple business districts.
