I'd also look at the towns of the Hudson valley (Westchester County) and Rockland County, NY, many of which have train access to NYC.

New Hope and Lambertville do look ideal but they are too far outside of the area I'm looking at.

It has an orchestra, an opera company, museums, a zoo, festivals, minor league Baseball and Hockey, Division 1 sports at Binghamton University, bars/nightlife that goes until 3 am some nights, some jobs(BAE Systems, L3, the University and CC, health care, Security Mutual Life Insurance, Lockheed Martin in nearby Owego, Columbian Financial, etc.) and quick access to mountains(the Poconos and Catskills), among other things. Not bad for a metro of about 250,000. https://visitbinghamton.org/ It also has suburbs. So, given that the city is only like 10 square miles, you can live in a suburb, but still be within quick access to amenities. Vestal, which is where Binghamton University is located, has some relatively upscale areas, with parts of villages such as Johnson City and Endicott offering walkability and places like Endwell, Port Dickinson and parts of the town of Chenango being good options outside of the city.

Thanks I can give that some consideration!

Check for small college and tourist towns. Those are your best options.

I'd agree they are larger than I'm looking for generally. And I am considering towns in NY, NJ, and PA which is the tri-state and beyond.

New Paltz immediately comes to mind for me, great little college town in a nice area in the foothills of the Catskills.

I know you mentioned New Hope / Lambertville is outside of the area you're looking in, but if you have flexibility they are great towns. Would add Princeton as well in that general area of NJ (though $$$).

I think I'm getting the general idea of what type of town the OP wants. How about Bristol CT?

Looking at the map, Ithaca is another city/area that would fit much of what you are looking for. It is another smaller area that has quite a bit for its size and has 3 colleges/universities in the area. It has a nice, active Downtown and good outdoor amenities in the immediate area. https://www.visitithaca.com/

Alright.

It's just weird, because as a New Yorker, the tri-state area is only NY, NJ and CT, but ok.

Second this. Unless too large for OP’s liking, Ithaca might be the best choice. It checks all boxes and the downtown area is incredibly vibrant largely due to the university presence. Beautiful surrounding areas too.

Near New Paltz in the same area/county are places like Kingston, a small city of about 23,000 and Saugerties, an artsy town to the north are within the green area. https://visitulstercountyny.com/

Same for towns south of Utica such as Clinton and New Hartford, with the latter having plenty of shopping and access to adjacent Utica(just outside of the green area). https://www.villageofclinton.com/

I am 34 years old, single, and looking for somewhere with some job opportunities (or at least within an hour commute) and opportunities to meet some people my age (clubs, sports teams, gyms). A big important factor is a walkable downtown area that is safe with at least a handful of bars and restaurants and things to do.

Affordable is best but lets disregard that for now. I find college towns or similar are what I like but does not need to be and I definitely don't want one that is overrun (like any big ten area). I don't want too small but not as big as say Scranton even.

I used this neat tool I found (https://www.smappen.com/) that gives me the driving distance from one or more areas and I want to be anywhere in that darker circle (attached). I'm not very familiar with NY...Oneonta looked interesting. I'm wondering if there are some sleeper towns I haven't looked into yet. I appreciate any feedback!
Poughkepsie area for sure. You want all that and young people? Stay East of the Hudson

Im 25 and would not live west of the Hudson in New York above West Point

Another city that meets this criteria to a T is Stamford CT. I find when people transition into maturing and leave Manhattan and Brooklyn, Stamford is a big first step in adulting when its time to leave NYC and get going. Great place to meet people, have a car and access amenities, etc
