The correct pronunciation is puh-KAHN or pih-KAHN. It was originally a Native American word pakani, "pa-KAH-nee," which the French recorded as pacane "pa-KAHN."
The people who say PEE-can or PEE-cahn live where pecans don't grow, i.e. the Northeast, upper Midwest, the British Isles, etc. That tells me that people in those regions originally learned the word from reading it, not from hearing it organically.
I'm from Minneapolis and say "pih-CON". However, pecans aren't a commonly-used ingredient around here so most people wouldn't be fazed by either pronunciation.
