I've never been to Duluth, but I have a client that moved from Duluth and she told me the same exact thing. That was one of the reasons (the other being extreme cold) that she was moving. She said there was homeless and crime everywhere, even during the depths of winter. She had to drive home past Superior WI from work and said it was no different in Superior either. I was kind of shocked.
Yes, lots of homelessness and alcoholism for a metro of it's size. The city is a rust belt city, not unlike a place like youngstown OH for instance. But there is also a sort of hippie mindset in the city that psuedo celebrates living as one wants, inclusive of homelessness. And they lack the corporate job base of some similar sized cities that are growing
Lol, funny you should mention FC at night. I brought one of my Urban studies co-majors, a Caucasian friend from college- to Fields Corner. This was in late 2016, or early 2017.
He is originally from NW DC and at the time I lived in Fields Corner, We were about to smoke a joint and I offered to walk him around the neighborhood around 8pm before we went to our next destination, but it was dark out. He and his friend of his who lived Downtown.
They were super steadfast in their NO. It was a hard NO. They were more sketched out than I anticipated-so I tried to like objectively see it from their perspective so I tried to take myself out of body and scanned the surroundings and then I sketchiness lol. Prior to that point hed never been south of downtown.
So as I looked around I realized okay..yea. Large liquor store, really (surprisingly) poor lighting, a dude drinking on the corner and talking to himself, and some Nike tech suit guys with hands in their pockets. A large abandoned FALLAS (now a mini-Target) Stuff I had seen as just normal city life but realized it looks a little foreboding if you weren't anticipating this. All of a sudden I started to notice the litter and some graffiti on the sides of buildings- their verbal response and body language was enough to make me see things I hadn't before.

Scottsdale is about 240,000. I would nominate Scottsdale as well as Irvine.
Are Scottsdale and Irvine cities though? I guess Scottsdale has Old Town but these are just large suburbs/ sprawls. Both places are awesome by the way.
