You need to strike quite a few of those off your list. A lot of those cities have lost much of their Southern charm.

Agreed, most of the Southern 'boom towns' are not as 'southern' as the smaller cities. I would list in no particular order:

Mobile, AL
Montgomery, AL
BIrmingham, AL
Savannah, GA
Augusta, GA
Macon, GA
Columbia, SC
Charleston, SC
Greensboro, NC
Wilmington, NC
Jackson, MS
Memphis, TN
Chattanooga, TN
Baton Rouge, LA
Pensacola, FL
Tallahassee, FL
Jacksonville, FL

Of course, Huntsville, AL for me. Here, you get more for your money. Huntsville is a boomtown right noew with the new thousands jobs, the new millions of square feet of retail, the new subdivisions, and the new people. Huntsville still has its southern flair with a mixture of a cosmopolitan and international feel......................and DIVERSITY! People here are very friendly; so you won't have any problems with making friends. From reading your posts, it seems like you are becoming a young professional who wants to suceed in life. Look no further, because Huntsville is where it's at!

To me, none of these cities have lost their Southern charm...it's still there, but there is also a lot of addtional charm from other regions/countries to go along with it. Adding new or different people and traditions to the cultural mix doesn't make the local culture disappear - it just gives the area some new dimensions.

I lived in Metro Atlanta for years and will go ahead and tell you that there is no Southern anything left in that city.

In your opinion, what kinds of things were missing in Atlanta that would have made it more southern?
