The people who I knew from Minnesota who made Savannah a destination did not do so for the beaches.

If beaches were the reason for their vacation trip, they would have went elsewhere.

Yeah most people visit Savannah for its historic downtown. There's no denying that.

Augusta posters think they're city is just soo important...they're delusional. Savannah is much more known and a much better city. Savannah is the true 2nd city in Georgia. Augusta is just for golf courses LOL. Lol, trying to say Savanah is visited for their beaches only. Uh, well Augusta is only visited for it's golf courses LOLOL.

More people may choose to visit Savannah...but more people choose to live in Augusta.

With that being said...IMO both cities are great cities...never have I once said Augusta was better than Savannah or vice versa. It seems that some posters have a complex because Augusta is the bigger metro...and because of its size has the potential to become the next major metro in Georgia (which was the title of the thread....not which is better). However all cities in Georgia outside of Atlanta have a long way to go before becoming a major metro.

Savannah, Augusta and Macon are all well known. I have yet to meet someone who asks me where I'm from and I say Augusta...and they don't know what I'm talking about. I don't even have to say Georgia and there's a capital called Augusta in Maine.

I wonder how different things might be if most of downtown Augusta wasn't destroyed in a fire in 1916.

Augusta and Macon is not that well known outside the south. The same can be said about Columbus. They probably all have the same reputation in the southeast region.

Again I have yet to meet someone who has never heard of Augusta, Savannah or Macon whenever they come up in discussion.

But unless we poll everybody in the world...this part of the discussion is really pointless.

Richmond County's population was 200,549 as of the 2010 census. The 2012 population is estimated at 202,587.

@StarBright. Right, but Richmond County contains three incorporated entities: Augusta-Richmond, Blythe and Hephzibah. Augusta is not coextensive with all of Richmond County the way Columbus is coextensive with all of Muscogee County. Augusta is thus the third-largest municipality in Georgia, with just over 197,000 residents in 2012.
