The motivations for secession are still the same: Economics and Enfranchisement.

For example, the $249+ Billion that Texans fork over to the former federal government to be wasted now stays in Texas.

That makes Texans $249 Billion richer.

GDP
Canada: $1,821,445,000
Australia: $1,564,419,000
State of Texas: $1,458,300,000

Without interference from the former federal government, Texas would easily surpass Canada and Australia in GDP and Standard of Living.

Realistically...

If Texas wants to leave, I have no problem with it. However, they would have to pay for the privilege. They have benefited by being part of the US for all of these years and that certainly has a value. I would be fine with it if they say took over the entire US Debt. Yep. Like it or not, Texas, you are not a sovereign state. You part of a set. And that is just the way it is. Put your money where your mouth is, or dummy up!

If you take the time to actually consider all things, the United States, as is, is a very remarkable place. Separating into a bunch of smaller countries would be an incredibly short sighted endeavor? Ever heard of "Divide and Conquer?" We would be setting ourselves up to be taken over by China or Russia. Now is the time to UNITE. United We Stand, Divided We Fall. Have a good weekend.

As others have stated it makes no sense financially or economically to split the nation.
Equally, it makes no sense to fly the confederate flag. Those who do, express sentiments that run counter to the interests of the United States, and therefore they self select, as untrustworthy Americans.

I've always thought the right to self determination is something recognized by the UN and championed by the USA.

It is. Every single United States citizen has the absolute, inalienable right to determine which US state they want to live in.

Tv news sensationalizes and overcovers the crazies of the world. Like most posters, I doubt the "south" wants to secede. Unity is better than division. That said, its not worth fighting a war over. If you dont wanna hang with me, I should just wish you well, not kill you.

Secession isn't a bad idea really. US federal power has HUGELY consolidated the last ~45 years and the South breaking away would be a huge check on this abominable trajectory. A "Confederated States of America" would be a force to reckon with, if it included Texas and Florida:

Texas has a huge economy and oil reserves.

The CSA has lots of natural resources - the mouth of the Mississippi, the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico, a number of major ports, and a lot of agricultural land.

The CSA is a major manufacturing hub and growing bigger (courtesy of the lack of unions !).

The CSA has lots of major military bases (though it's a big question whether the CSA could get the parts and service to keep equipment operational).

If the CSA then adopted a non-interference foreign policy, mutually favorable trade agreements, and sound money, it would be the country the current USA can't even hope to be.

Ha. Good luck teaching most of the residents to even spell "CSA" correctly 4 out of 5 attempts. Yeah, Sheriff Taylor would be quite a force on the international diplomatic stage.

As an immigrant to the US, it occurred to me, that there's not a lot of political difference between US born Confederate Flag waving types, and US born Muslim Jihadists who travel to the Middle East. They both oppose things the US stands for. In fact from the narrow perspective of what's best for the US, the Jihadists may be preferable. They at least focus their energy and activity overseas.

And they're at least smart enough to comprehend what it is they stand for, and honest enough to admit it.
