But I think this sentiment is at odds with the Christian values so many conservative Americans claim to uplift. This is a big part of the reason that the religious right are seen as hypocrites.
They forget that Jesus was a Liberal who said love the sinner and greed is a sin and the rich and greedy will not get into heaven and help the poor and those in need.

The short answer is that they are brainwashed by corporate interests that lie about the situation in other countries.
The long answer is a lot more complicated and one would need to examine the history of the United States. America was founded in order to be different from Europe and the Old World at large. This mentality forms the backbone of the American Dream, which broadly states that through hard work and dedication, anyone can achieve greatness. America is a nation where individualism is highly rewarded. That ethos extends to universal healthcare and social programs. The general consensus being that lower taxes are better and that those who are poor are mooches.
In recent years, the issue has become a lot more polarizing and we're seeing a lot more Americans voice their dissatisfaction at the way things are run.
those who are poor are likely mooches. if you think the poor get there by accident you are an idiot, sorry.

He sure was into handouts.
loaves and fishes
A miracle that Jesus performed; the Gospels record several instances of this miracle, with small differences in details. In the best known, Jesus was preaching to a crowd of thousands who grew hungry and needed to be fed, but only five loaves and two fishes could be found. He blessed the food and then commanded his disciples to distribute it among the people. After everyone had eaten and was satisfied, twelve baskets of food remained.

Really? I seem to remember the Bible telling us about him handing out free fish and bread and healing complete strangers free of charge.
Did he believe self sufficiency was an important quality to have? I'm sure of it, but he also said that it would be harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God than for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle. Also instructed his followers not to store up treasures on earth.
..So I think one is kidding themselves if they actually think that Christian doctrine upholds extreme wealth gaps.
Despised theft is what the billionaires who are not paying their taxes are doing.
Who isn't paying their taxes? If you have evidence that someone isn't paying their taxes you should report it to the authorities.
If your argument is that they aren't paying their fair share, the top 10% of earners pay 70% of the tax revenue in this country. If you want to talk about people who aren't paying their fair share and stealing, you should be looking at the 40% of people who pay no federal income tax, but have no problem accepting benefits that others have paid for.
And RE Jesus, he was all about helping the poor-voluntarily. He never forced anyone to do anything, nor did he advocate doing so.
