I've said it before - the soot from airlines flying over the snow in the arctic, along with the increased industrialization in China have darkened the snow in the arctic, making it absorb more energy and melt faster. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Also, look at the heat island effect in cities and then just scratch your head wondering "Why is BLACK asphalt so popular?"

HARRY -

Maybe the contrail reflectivity and the soot on the ice cancel each other out. Black asphalt is popular because asphalt is BLACK. If you want white pavement try concrete. At least that is grey.

Now if we wanted to discuss ChemTrails we could have some fun with the feeble minded.

I was thinking roads driveways and commercial parking lots could be paved with something lighter than Blacktop, which can be positively painful on bare feet during a hot summer day.

But how would you keep them clean, the black rubber from tires would darken them in no time. Maybe a more earth friendly and lighter colored car tire. Maybe hovercraft technology in the future applied to everyday vehicles, less friction heat with no wheels being in contact with pavement a possible bonus.

With all the push from DC politicos about global warming/ climate change, pushing the Cap & Trade bill (it's not dead, the new budget is depending on income from it), etc. -- don't you think it's rather ironic that the country is experiencing a winter not seen in several years?

Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor - looks like she decided to tell the politicians who the boss really is.
She's even hitting them right on the head with it with a big snow storm dumping on DC.
Sigh - do you think they will listen?

Will be interesting to see if the snows this winter in any way "act" like discussed by the OP.

They are saying there could be records set in DC but haven't yet heard the latest snowfall amount.

The storm could be the largest on record to hit Washington, topping the 28 inches recorded in January 1922. Before official record keeping began, 36 inches fell in 1772.

[LEFT]The U.S. capital is bracing for at least 75 centimetres of snow before the storm moves out to sea by Saturday evening. That would be the heaviest one-day snowfall in nearly 90 years.

So does the other side of the pillow.

White surfaces are good ideas for roofing in areas where the number of hot days significantly outnumber the cold ones but it would not be desireable as a blanket policy throught the nation. Before air conditioning became common it was the norm in Florida for roofing and exterior walls to be painted white.

There is a reflective thinkly insulated "blanket" that can be used as a substitute to the traditional "black paper" underneath the installation of new metal roofing that reflects up to 70% of the heat which passes through the metal roof itself. It works quite well.

I think whomever came up with this "white surface" idea probably had a way to corner the white paint market. However, it is exactly the kind of silly project that could be used in the "shovel ready" spendulus.
