The final leg of the Greensboro urban loop will be complete this month perhaps in a few weeks. After decades of planning and construction, the entire loop will finally be completed. I suspect they'll finally put I-840 directional shields next to the I-785 shields along I-85/I-40 in eastern Greensboro. Just to show how long construction took, I was in my early 20s when construction first started and now I'm in my mid 40s.
I can't wait for it to be finished! I drive from Danville, Virginia to Colfax, NC fairly regularly, so now I won't have to drive on I40 through the heart of Greensboro anymore to get there.

Oh wow! I wasn't expecting it to open until spring.
I've noticed some of the local news weather maps already show it complete but they do not have Winston's Northern Beltway on there. I wonder when they'll add it.

With a lot of these new major road construction projects, the contractor gets a bonus (usually capped at a certain amount) if they finish early. I think the weather cooperated over the last few years, plus the final segment was "only" something like 3.75 miles long, with less than 10 bridges to construct over that stretch.

Winston's should have been finished a number of years ago. In fact construction had planned to begin well before Greensboro's but lawsuits held up the process. But yes it will be great to have it open. It gives people alternatives to I-40 to get to the airport. If you live in northeast Greensboro you always had to drive south on hwy 29 and then west on I-40 or fight traffic to get to Bryan Blvd. The loop will also attract retail, commercial and industrial development
The 840 designation ends at interstate 40 not 85 in Southwest Greensboro
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!
I also just noticed that the whole loop is actually 39 miles, not 49.
