You just described any bbq restaurant menu anywhere.
In the South.

For chain bbq, Famous daves would kill that place anyday, and I don't even think famous daves is that great.
Tell me, NoodlesKnowles, where can someone staying at a hotel downtown find Famous Dave's within walking distance?

while i'm sure they make a ton of money [they] do a poor job representing the south IMHO.
I humbly disagree. It depends on the person visiting. And if they do indeed make a ton of money, then it is because people like dining there.

For good southern bbq, see Bucky's in Greer, and have some sweet potato crisp!
Greer is not located in the city of Greenville, much less "in downtown Greenville."
There isn't a logical reason for this thread to be hijacked and turned into yet another food fight. Everyone has an opinion about the quality of different restaurants in the city, but this topic was started by someone looking for affordable options within walking distance to/from his hotel on Main Street. He visited, left and then thanked us for the suggestions. End of story.

sorry if it was confusing, I was making comparisons, another downtown restaurant with better bbq was already mentioned, smoke on the water
We went to "The Lazy Goat" for the first time and I was hoping for really nice food because I've heard a lot of good things about it but I have to say I was disappointed. The food was average (not bad but also not good) and the amount of food was a joke. The prices would have been ok if the servings were bigger. The atmosphere was nice.

Lazy Goat has a Mediterranean, communal dining, tapas theme so dishes are meant to be small by nature of the type of restaurant. Ordering numerous dishes and sharing bites is the theme of the restaurant.

Fair point. We went threre because we love mediterranean food. We ordered all kinds of things and shared them but in the end I personally think the taste of the food isn't good enough that I would want to spend my money there again. We'll just try a different place next time.
Two of my favorites have already been mentioned but I'll give another vote to Sassafras and Trappe Door. Another downtown restaurant that doesn't get mentioned very often, but I really like it, is Overlook Grill.
