I just asked Christals sister how Christal was progressing and this is what she had to say...

"She likes to talk about things and she has allot of questions. But it is hard because of her short term memory loss. Her long term is starting to come back slowly. The doctors are having a hard time deciding if she will ever be able to live alone, it all depends on if she starts to remember things short term. I have faith that she will. and yes I hope its quicker than 6 months too!! "

Keep the prayers alive that her short term memory kicks in!

TVC, I had a stroke in 2006 and my short-term memory was fried. But, after years of intensive occupational/physical therapy, a lot of it has returned. So there's great hope for Christal.

Thank you so much for sharing this! If you don't mind me asking this...were you under constant care during the years of intensive occupational/physical therapy? This seems to be what the doctors are trying to assess...if she will need 24 hour around the clock care for the rest of her life...or until the short term memory improves.

Both my neurologist and my surgeon recommended that I go to a live-in facility where I'd have intensive therapy around the clock. They told me I'd probably spend 6 months to a year there. I should have done that but I had a beloved dog at home and couldnt bear the thought of being away from her for that long. So I went to a relative's home for a few months or so and then went back to my house (very scary at first). I took a cab to therapy every day for years.

My short-term memory isnt great but it's not a burden. I still cant write (thank goodness for computers) and I cant drive any further than a mile or so (my right leg gets too tired to be able to brake quickly if necessary). I also cant walk more than a few feet at a time (so I have to buy almost everything on the internet). There are still a lot of little quirks that I know about, but no one else sees them. Had I gone to the live-in facility, I'd have recovered better, but the past is the past and I'm content with my life now. I pray for the same for your friend -- that she'll recover well enough to be content.

TFW, thank you for sharing your story. How refreshing to hear someone say the past is the past and you're content with your life. You must be a pretty special person.

Thanks, Dude111 and LilyLady.

I dont usually post about my after-stroke struggles but did so here to let TVC15 know that there's always hope and never to give up praying for recovery.

Thank you all so very much and especially you TFW46! It is very encouraging to hear that you are content after your long recovery.

I certainly do have hope for Christal...it is just amazing that she even can talk right now!
