Hi-point recommends 1500-2000 rounds complete cleaning...just the type of gun it is....it's big ugly, but fires EVERY single time I pull the trigger...

Anyone who would prefer a 9 MM over a 45 ACP surely has made some mistakes when it comes to firearm. Sorry, Bud, when you made the statement that you would have bought that Taurus if it would have been 9 MM, you told us what kind of reasoning powers you use.
Not to get into a tangent, but I couldn't agree less. And a bit flamey, don't you think so?
,,,,Without cleaning? You can fire your pistol 2000+ rounds without cleaning and no FTF or FTE? ,,,,
lifelongMOgal did not mention not cleaning. Just not broken in for 2000 rounds.
Many vehicles are not broken in till after 30,000 miles. The oil change is implied like gun cleaning.
I use a .40 cal. S&W for work, I like the way it feels and the knock down power it has.
If the day comes that I must fire, then I don't want to have to use much more than one round to do the job, my life may depend on this.
I would never, never, for any reason use a 9mm, what a waste of time, MHO.
There aren't very many people that would agree with you I don't think, but this thread isn't about caliber.

Please people, I am not a knuckle head when it comes to guns/pistols/shotguns/machine guns/long rifles/...
But my knowledge of pistols is far less than the above, notice I threw machine gun in the mix....I'm retired Army (less than 2 years retired) ....so I may know a few things...and I hated the Beretta's they made they made us use..
Ferretkona....I never mentioned anything about a gun being broken in....I specifically asked about not cleaning your pistol for 2000 rounds, with NO FTF or FTE...Like my Hi-Point does.......and life started talking about being broken it.....to achieve the same results....
Nice analogy though........sorta....
using your same analogy.....Hi-Point is the Amzoil of not being clean, not needing to change your oil for 35,000 miles....and other pistols are basic oil and has to be changed or cleaned more often....
I'd probably buy the 45 if I had the money. I sure want a 1911 in my collection at some point.
That said the caliber debate is kinda silly & worn out. 9MMs kill ALOT of people as do 45's, its about preferences. If I need to carry a full sized gun I'd rather have 16 9mms than 9 45's. Just saying... but thats just me.
From a gunsmith's persective: I recently ordered a new Taurus Tracker .357 revolver for an insistent customer. I know they have improved their quality a lot in the last few years, but this one didn't demonstrate that too well. The fit was just OK, the operation was a bit rough and snaggy, and the finish of the less obvious parts was, frankly, pretty rough. In short, it sure t'wern't no Smith (which is the smoothest...) or Ruger.
Taurus's new 1911 sports a lot of options that would make it quite expensive as a custom, and I've read the gun reports. Gun reports, although sometimes more than honest, often tend to gild the lily.
By comparison, I have found that Para 1911 type products are excellent, and not too expensive. Or, order a Kimber ($$) The Para LDA Compact is my personal carry weapon, though I did choose to smooth out the slide a tad bit. It was quite OK in stock form though, and it is also accurate. and has yet to jam, ever.
Bottom line: the Taurus offers some good value for the money, but perhaps you will need to send it to a good 1911 shop for a $250 - $300 tune-up. Which means you could also just pay that "up" in the first place from some other maker.
Now if you don't need a 1911 clone, do look at the Springfield Armories XD(M)s, in any of it's caliber offerings: 9, .40 or .45ACP. All fantastic, super-accurate, über-reliable, easily taken down (amazingly easy!) and not that expensive (≈ $620) with their excellent hardcase, holster, magazine holster and mag loading assist. Truly recommendable!
