I used to live in northern Virginia loooong ago (in the mid to late 80's). I currently live in Atlanta, but am looking at maybe moving somewhere closer to the coast.

How would Newport News measure up? Tidewater in general has a very mixed reputation (and people have always told me to steer clear of Richmond).

What is it like there? How does it compare to other cities on the coast like Savannah, New Orleans, Pensacola or Jacksonville?

Ha ha! I started this post almost five years ago! We did, in fact, move to NN, and we're very happy here. We moved to the midtown area (near CNU). I wouldn't recommend every area of NN, but we think midtown is a great place to live.

I can't compare it to the other places you've mentioned because I've never been to any of them. If you have any specific questions about NN, though, I'd be happy and try and answer them. I'm sure others will jump in, too.

Default How do you like Newport News?

Are there nice places within Newport News to raise a family (we have three young kids and homeschool, so schools are not really relevant)? If not, are there nice areas near NN (less than a 30 minute commute)?

If you didn't already live there, would you move to Newport News?

Thanks so much!
Hello artistatheart,

I'm wondering how you are enjoying Newport News? Would you recommend moving there?

Hi FreedMind! Yes, my family and I love living in Newport News. We live in what is considered midtown Newport News. It's basically the area close to CNU (Christopher Newport University). It's safe and close to a lot of shopping, museums, parks, etc. I wouldn't say I would recommend living in *every* area of Newport News (the southeastern section is especially to be avoided), but we're very happy living in our part.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
