Talking about the Kona side of the Big Island: $30 an hour and be good in what you do. And reliable. And friendly. And patient till you get a few absentee home and condo owners lined up.

Learn to deal with non-permitted buildings and get familiar with our specific building codes. Much work will be off the books and on cash base. Be discreet. Offer free consultations to realtors.

My 5 cents.

$30/hour??

- Vehicle expense (gas, deprecation, wear and tear)
- Insurance for vehicle and business
- Tools (they break, become lost, are stolen, become obsolete)
- Advertising
- Countless hours lost to free estimates
- Risk of creating damage to the home (you will lose money on those jobs)
- Taxes (yes, it's a often a "cash" business but many still pay some taxes)
- Learn skills (this takes years of previous work experience in a myriad of different trades)

If you've only been paying $30/hour, be thankful your handyman hasn't destroyed your home.
