You forgot about the Portegees. When I was stationed in Hawaii during the 90's, the Portegees were the butt of many jokes, sort of how people on the mainland used to tell Pollock jokes.

Well as a person from the mainland or as I say the real states a lot of people here are ignorant of other cultures except what's here basically Asian and Polynesian so anything outside of that you get weird questions about who you are or stereotyped by what someone saw on television or in a magazine. America is a melting pot indeed so. Just because someone is Caucasian does not mean he or she is the same ethnicity as the rest of the white world. So hawaii has its racial flaws too. The people from here are more tolerable though because it's an island it's not like you can have 500 miles between you and the person you dispise so you deal with race and culture differently.

I am curious to know if this is still the case I live in California but was born in the Azores Islands here in certain areas of California there are some large Portuguese communities especially in the Bay area ad Central California but we don't refer to ourselves as Portegees and I never hear any jokes about Portuguese people here.

There are somethings that hasn't changed in the history of Hawai'i and is obviously still prevalent today and that is some groups of people seek not to be part of but to be above everybody else.

Well, the OP vanished years ago, but this thread seems pretty active anyway. How blacks are treated in Hawaii was a topic of conversation among a group of friends several days ago. It was brought up as a topic mostly because of the current difficulties the mainland has been having between police and black folks. However, as part of the conversation, one of the folks in the group said it was much better here than it was on the mainland. Her relatives on the mainland who live in an affluent part of town, are always getting stopped by police asking them what they are doing in the neighborhood when they are going home late at night. She said over here, there's no such harassment. Or if there is any harassment it is at a much lower level. So, her opinion is that it is much better here.

The 5 Best States for Black People - The Root

Hawaii

Hawaii has a lot of things going for it. It’s a gorgeous tropical paradise. Shockingly, marijuana isn’t legal (except on a limited basis for medical use), despite the fact that everyone seems unnaturally chill all the time. It’s also the home state of President Barack Obama, and once you look at its statistics on race, you can see why Hawaii was the first state to produce the nation’s first black president.

The most racially diverse state in the union, Hawaii is ranked by the Ann E. Casey Foundation as the best state for raising black children. The foundation based its ranking on a statistical study of socioeconomic status, access to education and home life.

Hawaii’s incarceration rate for black people is astronomically lower than the national average. With Wisconsin—one of the worst states for black Americans—locking up African Americans to the tune of 4,416 for every 100,000 black people, Hawaii is much more proportional, imprisoning 851 for every 100,000 black Hawaiians (pdf). The national average for black imprisonment is 2,290 per 100,000. No wonder the president, who’s written about some youthful indiscretions involving pot, managed to toke it and not end up with a record, unlike so many other young black men throughout the United States. Obama grew up in the right state at the right time. Also, black people in Hawaii? They’re not broke. The state has the highest black household income at $66,629.
