Those meals on Hawaiian Airlines aren't exactly "free" -- folks usually pay for them via higher airfares.

It's the new reality of flying. The smarter passengers toss a one pound bag of M&M's and a package of beef jerky into their carry-on.

I don't recommend a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The rest of the hungry passengers might mug you. It could get ugly.

It's probably better (and more nutritionally-balanced) to simply take along a couple of bentō in an insulated bag.

All three are basically made from one of the waste products of brewing... brewers yeast.

Vegemite adds barley malt, another brewer's staple. All three add vegetable flavoring in varying proportions.

And all three are (ahem) an acquired taste.

Maybe in the financial world, but since this is an aviation discussion the use of the ICAO code 'ANZ' for Air New Zealand is completely appropriate.

You can do whatever you want, but if you want anyone from Australia or New Zealand to know what you're talkng about, use Air NZ. Try googling ANZ and see what you come up with.

Yup, ANZ is a bank. At least according to Google and apparently most Kiwis and Aussies, too.

Is the nine hour flight non-stop? No touch downs in Tahiti or anywhere along the way? That seems like a really long time to be in an airplane. Especially, as you mentioned, without food. And you just know there's gonna be folks who will not bring any and be hungry.

Do first class folks get food? Then the smell of it would drift all over the airplane.

As explained earlier, you can buy any ticket with or without a meal. It's the Passenger's choice. Apparently the OP is just annoyed about the choice he made.

And yes, since this is an aviation related topic, ANZ is absolutely correct for Air New Zealand, no matter what the dwarves may think about it...

Non-stop to Hawaii. Fiji Air (or whatever it's called now) does a stopover in Fiji and Air Tahiti does a stopover in Tahiti. Both sounded appealing, but 1) they make it impractical to stay longer than 20 hours and 2) we are stopping in Hawaii to break up the 12 hour flight to California (that flight includes food). Breaking the flight up a second time seemed excessive. Actually, since Qantas dropped out of the Auckland-California business, Air New Zealand has gotten unaffordable to fly direct, so we usually go through Australia. Unfortunately, that's in the wrong direction, so it becomes a 3 hour flight plus a 14 hour flight. Allow me to repeat: Air New Zealand sucks.

Are there any other options? AirNZ is the only affordable airline? Hmm, wonder how many pizzas you could take as carry on? You'd be able to sell the slices for rather a lot, I'd expect. (Is New Zealand Marmite ever used as a pizza topping?)

There is occasionally a "re positioning" cruise where a cruise ship starts in Honolulu and ends up in Sydney which is still not New Zealand, but at least it's closer. I don't know where they go from there or exactly when they re-position again but they have to go North again at some point. It may not be much more expensive than flying and you'd not have to worry about a lack of food at all. If anything, the problem would be way too much food. Although the schedule is really limited.

Seems odd that California flights get food and Hawaii flights don't. Oh well, just another instance of Hawaii ain't like the mainland, I guess.
