7:00 pm Wednesday. Now that Madeline has been downgraded to a tropical storm, we're getting some wind and rain. Not a whole bunch yet, but some wind and rain. Just drove back from Kailua-Kona and it was a nice day over there. Came around the corner of the mountain in Waimea and it got dark and rainy. We will see how it goes from here.

Lester is damn scary looking right now. A classic symmetrical borderline annular hurricane that could care less about the moderate sheer impacting it. It's plowing forward and growing in strength AND size defying all forecasting models by a good margin. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a Cat 4 storm right now (4 p.m. Thursday)... when just 12 hours ago it was forecast to be a Cat 2. We will see in the next update.

This might be the first in history. It has the potential to cause massive destruction here. Let's all hope it veers north.

Maybe it wants to come to the Big Island for Labor Day like all the Harleys do? We will watch and see what happens.

So, did anyone else notice the earthquake last night just past midnight? All we need now is a new lava flow to round things out.

The storm should stay north of all the islands and then head toward Alaska but we shall see.

3.7 is hardly noticeable unless it's in your backyard, which this apparently was. Living on Maui so many years, I never worried about lava with every quake, but I can see the BI would be different.

Madeline was a no-show in Kona. As expected. Not a drop of rain or a hint of a breeze. Just humid, humid, hot and more humid.

Lester will be a no-show as well. Stores, businesses, and schools closing just because... A few guys buying their six-packs and kids heading for the beaches.

Not a "no-show" on the east side of the island. 4.85" of rain in Hilo with severe flooding, 4.24" in Volcano, 3.1" in Kuristown. And most of the rain came down in a very short period of time, thus the flooding. Did you guys see the video of Rainbow Falls on Facebook?

Where I live near South Point, we had 1.59" of rain, but a neighbor a mile away and higher up had just over an inch. At least the winds were no worse than the usual strong gusts we get.

I hope so, but I'm sure that's what some folks thought about Iniki, too.

Just a bit o rain with the last two, thankfully. The week before the storms was even wetter, with trade wind showers, and the total tally was 23 inches for the month of August. That's the wettest August in my Puna experience.
