That may very well happen. Although I don’t think many people grasp just how many businesses will never recover.

Just about the only thing keeping riots from his doorstep is the federal pandemic unemployment. Once mainland states start recovering, there's going to be less emphasis on trying to get it extended.

If hawaii is still in lockdown mode when it ends, we're going to be in big trouble since tourism isn't coming back all at once... it will be a more gradual increase, probably at 20-30% of normal levels and slowly increasing over time. Ideally we would want the lockdown to end at least a month before the federal unemployment ends. I swear he has to have an ulterior motive, like elderly at risk parents he's trying to protect or something, at least then it's somewhat understandable. Right now, it's just INSANE. We're making national news on how bad the economy is and how slow we're reopening anything.

Cult leader among 21 people arrested on Hawaii Island for violating emergency orders

Why does the Big Island attract so many cults? Another discussion I suppose.

A cult leader is among 21 people arrested on the Big Island this week for violating emergency orders.

It's the largest group of quarantine breakers yet.

"They already detained eight of us. They going to be detaining the rest of us,” Eligio Lee Bishop said on his social media page.

The cult goes by the name "Carbon Nation" and Bishop is the leader.

According to Hawaii County Police, the group arrived on June 7th and June 8th.

Twenty of them were arrested in Puna for allegedly violating the 14-day visitor quarantine.

Nine were arrested in Fern Forest on Wednesday, while 12 were arrested in Hawaiian Paradise Park on Thursday.

East Hawaii finally bags a quarantine buster!

I wonder how it came about. Wouldn't be surprised if the cops looked into their address given at HNL airport and kept an eye on them.

Pretty sure they did at least one drive by at my place during my recent visit.

Maui would probably take the lead in cults if only it were more affordable...

Saw for the first time HPD drive by and turned down the street. We are on a corner lot. Our quarantine ends tonight at midnight tonight.

According to friend in the area these folks had widely advertised their trek to Big Island on social media (foolish!) and locals were looking out for them because they have a bad rep due to many allegations of abuse to women and children. He said bail for the whole lot of them added up to $56K.

It does shock me that fools continue to advertise their intent to break the law (and their actions of actually breaking the law) regarding Hawaii's quarantine rules on social media, which is relatively easy to track. Most of the cases I've seen of non-residents being arrested for violating quarantine seem to have been due to being tracked by social media posts of their activity.

But given that Hawaii cannot force people to leave the state, stories of quarantine breakers being escorted to the airport and put back on flights to the mainland (paid for the state's visitor association) told me that these people were voluntarily agreeing to leave, likely in exchange for having charges against them dropped.

This story regarding the cult leader from Hawaii News Now essentially confirmed my theory of why people were choosing to leave . . . note, the cult leader declined to fly back to Los Angeles despite being "jailed." The very fact that this offer was even made in spite of the man being in jail tells me that there is some backroom shenanigans between the state judiciary and others to get quarantine breakers out of jail and out of the states. But there is an issue and potentially big problem when you get more and more people deciding that they aren't going anywhere.

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii President and CEO said she arranged transportation for the cult to fly back to Los Angeles, but got a phone call from Hawaii Island law enforcement that the cult leader declined, and wants his group to set up home on the Big Island.

As I've said before, I'm actually shocked that more homeless aren't arriving in Hawaii and openly flouting quarantine rules in order to be housed and fed for two weeks in an air conditioned lockup.

And, note, if and when Hawaii tries to jail quarantine breakers for a period of what would have surpassed their 14 day quarantine, Hawaii gets onto very shaky constitutional ground, so I don't expect to see that happen.

hawaii is just dumb for attempting to rely on the quarantine for months as a first line of defense. What's the expression?
Like trying to herd 50 cats after theyve been let loose from the cage? They should have already been setting up procedures in place at the airports so the quarantine would only supplement these first line measures. Instead, hawaii like usual is ass backwards.
