I looked at some of that housing when I was searching for a place (if I'm thinking about the same area), but it was too filthy and trashy for me. The exterior of the buildings even looked bad.

I’m going to skip all the posts and cut to the chase.

A budget of up to $2,000/month is woefully inadequate for Waikiki to downtown. I wouldn’t even bother.

I’d go to Florida and live well instead.

2k for monthly rent, not 2k for everything. I'm making 92k so I'm pretty sure it'd be doable. Noted though, I'm definitely also looking at Florida. TBH I think I would gel with the culture much more in Hawaii though. It's not just about warm beaches + palm trees for me.

2K for rent is woefully inadequate. Don’t get sucked into a fantasy - you will find no special vibe in Hawaii. Just tourists and locals who really won’t care to know you. Just saying.

I don't know about woefully inadequate lmao, I can quite literally see on the internet that my salary is sufficient to live there and save up for retirement.

Hawaii actually is one of the running capitals of the world and has a pretty big endurance sport culture there, so I mean as long as I get to participate in that, and meet some other active folks to workout with, I'm gravy baby.

Apartments (both studios and one bedrooms) can be found in Waikiki for less than $2,000 per month. Just don’t expect the nicest buildings. On that note, Waikiki has an abundance of older and crappy buildings in general.

Yeah I've been looking around, there are plenty of apartments for rent under 2k. Some pretty acceptable ones for 1700 or less too. I'm not expecting them to look like some glistening new apartments you'd find in Houston Texas.

I can tell from the photos and my apartment search so far, all the housing / appliances are quite old. Pretty much all over the islands it's tough to find modern buildings and apartments for a fair shake, but that's the price you pay for the location, and I'm willing to make that sacrifice.

The point of the trip for me, would be to explore, take plenty of photos, run on some beautiful trails, meet some likeminded people, spend some time on the beach, learn to surf, and live it up before I move back to the mainland and put a down payment on a house somewhere to settle down.

It all depends on what you can settle with. Small studio nearer town or the beach, or 1br condo little further away. go even further away, there's townhouses, etc. I think your budget is ok for finding somewhere in town. Rental market for condos is severely depressed due to covid. I'm seeing -15% advertised prices and tons of vacancies.

back of the envelope calculation - $4k/month all living expenses = $48K. 92k after all taxes might be 65k. 17k for saving and buying a car, etc.

You should know this, but don't put money down without seeing the property. Tons of scams. Also don't look at the lowest pricing listings, those tend to have high risk of scams.

If you plan this to be transient, short term, probably low risk in making the move. Just take as little as you can, and try to sign a 6 month lease.

I actually really don't spend nearly 4k a month. Assuming I spend 1800 max on rent / utilities, I can keep grocery & drinks to under 300-350 a month here, assuming that'll be 25% more expensive on the island, so 400, maybe 500 max. So really, I'd just need around 2300 for bare living, maybe splurge an extra 200 for drinks / eating out per month (even that, is a stretch). I'm definitely not one of those spendy software engineers you might meet. I was unemployed for a year+, I try to stretch my money and try to avoid buying expensive brands. Though surfing lessons, rental cars, ubers, etc may tack on a bit more than I anticipate.

I'm looking at running like a 2.5-3k / month budget, leaving me ~25-30k a year to throw into a roth, my 401k, and my brokerage account. Judging off my expenses for the past few months, it'd be closer to the 2.5k / 30k range though.

Where in Florida do you recommend? What experience do you have in Hawaii or Florida. Can you tell me a bit more about your own personal experience? We are entirely different people after all and might have different experiences / needs....
