Now that I have all paperwork done I would like to do a flight in end of OCT and and Middle of April if you can arrange!!! Our Paperwork wasn't done until Dec this year. But if my dog doesn't loose 5 lbs sounds like I will pay real close to the amount you had! and deal with cargo and crate and wonder of how he will behave around strangers.

Have seen conflicting (old) reports saying one could take a dog in cabin & those saying none of the airlines allow it. 2 vets have said do not put my 18 pound Shih Tzu in cargo. Can anyone update me on how the best way to get my dog to Hawaii? Many thank

No dogs (or any animal) on any airline in the cabin overwater to Hawaii unless you find a special charter.
I've sent pets a few times between Hawaii and the mainland and it has always gone smoothly.

According to the United website, they state the following regarding pets in the cabin:
Your pet carrier may be either hard- or soft-sided and must prevent escape of your pet into the cabin. No part of the animal should protrude from the carrier, and the floor must be absorbent enough to retain liquids and solids. Ventilation must be adequate. In order to be carried on board, hard-sided kennels may not exceed 17.5 x 12 x 7.5 inches (44 x 30 x 19 cm), and soft-sided pet carriers may not exceed 18 x 11 x 11 inches (46 x 28 x 28 cm). Carriers must fit under the seat.
Otherwise, your pet goes as checked baggage in a pressurized area. When we moved, we wanted to minimize the flight for our pets so we drove a few days to San Francisco and flew United direct to Kona.

Sigh, it isn't otherwise your pet goes as checked baggage, they aren't going in the cabin, period. - There are no commercial flights where one can take a pet except a certified guide dog in the cabin on the overwater flight to Hawaii. NONE. Only charters.

The search results at united.com for "traveling with pets" didn't have the Hawaii exception on it, just the dimensions of the pet carriers allowed for cabin travel. Thanks for the clarification even though it appeared to be a painful experience for you. Breath deep, exhale, relax...

Huh? Just pointing out the fact there you can't fly pets in the cabin despite you implying you can. The only pain is for anyone who thought they could and then would get the harsh reality it isn't possible.
