Funny to read about this film in a forum dominated by Americans. I didn't know that it is so popular in the U.S.
It's one of my favorite films and I watched it many times on TV. I'm always amazed about the impact of the music (by Klaus Doldinger), which is almost as famous over here as the film itself.
A thing you may not know is that one of the actors - Herbert Grönemeyer, the blond Leutnant Werner - is one of Germany's most popular musicians.

Well, what can I say? It's a GREAT movie. The best submarine movie ever - and one of the best war movies ever as well.
And I like the music as well. Had a big interest in soundtracks for a longgggggg time (for many years I collected soundtracks) so yeah, I noticed the music right off and have a keen appreciation of how much it adds to the film (I especially remember in the scene where the Captain is urging the boat forward through the wind and rain). Just awesome.

German films periodically do well in the States especially when you factor in DVD rentals. Das Boot is probably the biggest success story though. Its a masterpiece.
I'll have to check that out - it sounds interesting.
Have to agree with you about Australian WW II films - at least to the point about them being not made that often. Certainly on the WW I topic, Gallipoli is a wonderful film - right up there alongside Das Boot in my Top Ten list.
Das Boot is a despicable movie about savage U-boat men wallowing in maudlin and typically German self-pity. Indeed, we are asked to pity a group that had none for others. The myth of the "good German" at work and the movie equivalent of a Hummel figurine.

LOL! Well if it makes you feel better, my late grandfather bombed U-Boats during WWII (he had pictures). He liked the film.

You may not realize it, but you do Goose Step. Just in a different way!
