Hopefully 2010-2020 will be the best, because 2000-2009 sucked lol.

Maybe because I grew up in the 90's, and everyone has a rosy picture of the decade in which they spent their formative years. But things seemed a lot better then. The 50's seem like the easy answer, but too me, nothing great about fallout shelters and nuclear war threats with videos about hiding under desks lol.

1960's hands down. The 1950's was before social progress, the 1860's and 1960's were both the civil rights movements that affected everything. What happened in the 60's was truly amazing. The music (Beatles), the birth of hippies and peace! Social progress, nothing fake or plastic (the 1950's). Who can turn down vintage clothes? The 50's to me were fake, happy, but fake. The 70's economy sucked, great music and love punk. 80's great music and movies, 90's great music, movies, and grunge fashion. However if we took out the 60's, every other decade above wouldn't be the same.

What you had in the 50's was a decade pretending to be perfect, it covered up its imperfections. You had aspects of racism and sexism, but it was on the peak just before the world would stand up and stop it. Without the 60's, everything would be different. We needed all of those battles and mistakes to get us where we are. The 50's was fake, filled with war propaganda and gender stereotypes within families that would make today look like a world without gender at all. Elvis started rock I agree, but it wasn't until the 60's when rock really began. The styles weren't all long dresses in the 60's, it was more easy going and set to the individual. I could go on...

I would say the 1930s. I didn't live back then and I assume most of us on this site don't really know what it was like. But it was the golden age of Hollywood and that was only reflective of the golden age of America at that time. True, there was a great depression on but the American people had faith in each other back then and socially speaking it was a golden age.

1975-1984

I don't know what was the "best" decade in American History. But I voted 1970s because it's easily my favorite, followed closely by the 1980s. That's why I typed 1975-1984, the best of both decades for me. Even though I hadn't been born yet. Great music, I like the car design, popular culture, technology and everything else is just where I want it to be during that time.

The 50s were probably great if you were a white, middle-class, male heterosexual. For someone half-black/half-white like me, my very existence would be threatened during that decade. Not to mention, they would probably throw me in one of those dreadful housing projects. Another possibility is the misdiagnosis of my autism, which could land me in an asylum. Life would likely be terrible for me in the 50s. Screw the 50s.

The most truthful way of looking at it however, is that everything started going downhill from about 1492 onward.

I picked the 1970s. I was in grade school back then. This decade is rich in history; both good and bad. Many things happened during this decade. When I think about the 70s I think about freedom and opportunity. The worst was the 1990s.

-Cheers.

BIG DADDY shares the opinion of 64 other folks currently on this fine thread that the 90s was the best, but like all mere mortals BIG DADDY is biased because this time period represents his childhood.

The 90s were great in that the economy was pretty good in the mid to late 90s. The crime rate got lower every year, and technology was around but still had not taken over.

BIG DADDY is of the opinion this decade sucks too. Granted there was not an economic collapse (yet) or 9/11 but the 10s have been horrible so far in the humble opinion of BIG DADDY.
