One of my hobbies is walking around town and picking up trash. It's amazing what people toss out. I find a lot of the little single serve alcohol bottles and quite a few Dairy Queen drink cups. I give myself 5 points for each one of those. Items of clothing are 20 points each. When I get to 500 points I get a treat. I do 5 to 6 miles every day.

Before I had to rely on my wheelchair I was walking stooped over so bad I had to look at the ground. Very often when I would be walking from the WalMart parking lot to my motorcycle I would find money on the ground. I did have a policy though: Do not bend down to pick up anything less that a quarter. A lot of you older folks know what I mean.

Default My Hobby Is Knotting

I'm glad to hear that someone is asking about hobbies, because having a hobby is a very important part of living happily. At least it is in my culture.

One of my hobbies is knotting, which is the making of knots, usually for various applications around the home. You'd be amazed what you can do with the right "personal library of knots." That's what the hobby is all about: You learn what's possible; you decide which knots you like and which you don't and why; you decide which knots to include in your personal library; and you think of all of the possible applications that you could handle, with that personal library of knots. There are plenty of books and videos and web sites in existence that can provide you with useful information. You don't have to spend a lot of money for this hobby. You'll likely eventually discover money-saving applications, too.

I can't get ^too^ specific about those web sites or what kind of rope to use (as I don't want to be accused of advertising), but perhaps I could give the general advice that solid braid or hollow braid rope is more comfortable for knotting than is twisted rope. And any rope with a core and a sheath is not (pun) recommended, because a sheath is always easily damaged. (That's general advice, not advertising.)

Another one of my hobbies is blogging about the knots and their applications that I enjoy! (Can't give you that web site either. . . . )

Another one of my hobbies is posting in forums like this one.

Best wishes. Hope I gave you a good hobby idea. With the right combination of knots, you can build things, fix things, save money, and more.

Default Is this thread for the Birds ?

I'm now retired, but was lucky enough to have a father that started taking me bird watching when I was a lil nipper. I have been all over north America on vacations based on bird watching. Most serious bird watching sites are easily accessed by all ages. In fact I have been to many wonderful places that you didn't even have to get out of the car. It can also be started with a smaller investment than most hobbies. All you really need is a pair of decent binoculars and a birders guide. sure you can spend a small fortune on very good binoculars, but it's not necessary for starting out. It is a very soothing and exciting hobby and one great thing is that when you first start a life list nearly all birds are a first. After some experience, it is exciting to see a rare bird for the first time. Being out birdwatching really takes care of your built up every day stresses, and becomes an almost spiritual experience. A trip to central Nebraska to witness the spring migration of the sand hills cranes will bring you to tears. A trip to Point Pelee about 30 miles southeast of Detroit in Canada to see the spring migration of the warblers is amazing. On a spring trip to Great Bend Kansas, which is where the central u.s. flyway comes to a choke point is out of this world. You will see birds you will never believe even exist, let alone in the middle of Kansas. I could go on and on, but if most of your vacations are more exhausting than rejuvenating, go bird watching and feel stress free and alive again.

I belonged in years gone by. At one time I had plates from 26 countries. Down to just a few now.

HiToYou, my dad was interested in knots as well. He knew all the old "cowboy" knots and sent for a book from the Naval Institute Press that showed how to make the knots from the days of sailing ships. This was decades ago. Dad had a lot of interests in useful things like that.

Maybe boxing? I guess that boxing (or some kind of karate) gives not only good shape but also a great amount of confidence. Both things are important for men.

Does someone know if there is somewhere an online list of top 100 hobbies for men ?
Buy used cars, flip them, and sell them. That is a gratifying hobby and side business.

Until you loose some money doing it, that’s removes all of the fun, unless of course your skilled at it!

I enjoy;

Biking
Kayaking
Volunteering at Habitat
Shooting (at targets)
Yard work/landscaping
Woodworking
House improvements & maintenance
Trips to the shore and interesting Cities
Reading & interesting TV series
And gourmet cooking

The days fly by!
