I remember when I was hunting for a house, I saw many from the 50-70s era being built with atriums. An awesome interior design!
Nowadays, they aren't as common as they used to be but I heard that they are coming back.
What's your opinion on those? Would you like to live in a house with atrium?

No.
Maintenance is an issue.

My sister has one. She has been in the house 4 years and just got it redone to be more functional. It is pretty cool, but she has not had any luck getting plants to grow so far. I don’t think there are any other maintenance issues though.

I can appreciate them in someone else's home, but I am not a fan. It would not fit with the style home that I like and as Davebarnes said I too don't want to have to maintain them.

The basic concept was to “bring the outdoors in”.

Why not just go outside? I know it’s a hard concept for some to wrap their head around… but geez people, go smell a rose!

I think the benefit is that it is enclosed, so there is a lot more shade and a lot fewer bugs. I have a patio/deck area, but it is not really that desirable for me to use it because it gets the afternoon sun and is absolutely sweltering and buggy. At some point, I want to do an addition of a 2nd bathroom and put some sort of roof over what is now the deck area to make the area more functional.

I built a former house and used kelwall for an atrium Breakfast room. Really liked it an never had a problem. Snow just slides off. I’m no expert but just throwing out a first hand experience. It is translucent not transparent

otherwise known as an inner courtyard, it's been a feature of houses around the world going back centuries. I like them when well integrated.

Like these courtyard examples below.

To me, not saying it is actually correct, to me the above pictures are of a courtyard and an atrium is an indoor space.
